A village house,twelve keys.

Most of Saint-Tropez's grand hotels keep their guests at a polite distance, up in the hills or out by the beaches. Pan Deï Palais puts them in the middle of the village. A sunny yellow façade on a street just behind the Place des Lices gives nothing away, but behind it lies a house of twelve rooms that seems to have come straight from Rajasthan, with the port close enough to walk to in sandals. This is the rarest luxury on the peninsula: to live inside Saint-Tropez and have it vanish the moment the door closes.

The house began with a love story. Jean-François Allard, a veteran of the Napoleonic wars, went east to command troops for a maharaja in Lahore and fell for Bannu Pan Deï, a princess from the foothills of the Himalayas. In 1835 he brought her home to Saint-Tropez and built her this house. He went back to India and died there a few years later, and she stayed on for nearly half a century. Legend has it that she walked down to the sea each evening to wait for him.

Airelles has kept her India alive without turning it into a costume. Inside, the subcontinent takes over, all carved wood and painted walls, with alcoves glowing in soft, low light. Four-poster beds stand among luminous Indian textiles. The Princess Suite, fittingly, is the largest, and on the top floor the Tropezian Suite opens onto a private terrace above the rooftops of Saint-Tropez.

The garden is where the spell is strongest. A minute from the market square, a pool of turquoise mosaic lies among palms and olive trees, and breakfast is served outside in the shade. In a town where every sunlounger is a stage, this is a garden where nobody is watching.

The days are pure Airelles. A Mini Moke waits to run guests down to Pampelonne, or the house Rolls-Royce takes them to Jardin Tropezina, the group's beach on the sand. La Messardière, the Airelles castle above the bay, opens its spa and its children's camp to them. And at the end of an evening at the port, the walk home takes a few minutes through the old streets, to a yellow door and a garden that has gone quiet.

Dinner can stay in the garden. At Les Délices du Pan Deï, the chef, Paul Benimelli, cooks with a quiet nod to India, in dishes served for sharing, as at a family table, while the town hums on just beyond the wall. The house's own spa is small, and in July the crowds are right outside, which is precisely why the door matters. Couples come for the romance and families take the connecting suites, while a party of friends can have the house entirely to themselves.

The general built this house so that a princess far from India could feel at home in Saint-Tropez. Nearly two centuries later, it performs the same magic in reverse: just behind the Place des Lices, Saint-Tropez feels a world away.

In the names

The Garden Junior Suites take their names from Indian deities and symbols, and one from Prince Seed Poor, son of General Allard and Princess Bannu Pan Deï.

The Village Junior Suites

Each Village Junior Suite is placed under an Indian figure, Surya, Chandra or Maharaja Ranjit Singh, with embroidered rugs, carved wood and, in some, a four-poster bed. They measure up to 40 square metres, sleep three, and look over the rooftops of the village. On request a suite connects to a Superior Room or to the Princess Suite.

The Princess Suite

Named for Princess Bannu Pan Deï, the suite has wooden floors, antique doors and deep-coloured textiles. A master bedroom with a king-size bed or twins sits beside a separate living room that can become a second bedroom, with two bathrooms and two private entrances. It sleeps four, and connects to a Village Junior Suite when a family needs more room.

The Tropezian Suite

On the top floor, the Tropezian Suite opens onto a private terrace over the village roofs. Its 50 square metres hold a master bedroom with a sitting area under a pitched ceiling and skylight, an adjoining second bedroom, two dressing rooms and a bathroom with bath and shower. It sleeps four and is the room to ask for when a terrace matters.

Les Délices in the garden

The restaurant is a terrace on the garden beside the pool, served at lunch and dinner. Chef Paul Benimelli cooks between the Riviera and Asia, with Indian, Chinese and Japanese influences, and in the evening dishes come for sharing. Sunday brings a brunch, and the garden bar starts the evening. Breakfast is served out in the same garden each morning.

Why this one

  1. Inside the village.

Steps from the Place des Lices.

  2. A garden behind the door.

    Pool, palms and olive trees.

  3. Twelve keys.

The whole house can be booked.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Garden side or village side.

The two Junior Suite categories share a size and a capacity but face different ways. The Garden Junior Suites have large windows onto the garden and pool, so the evening restaurant and bar are right below. The Village Junior Suites look over the rooftops of Saint-Tropez instead. The Superior Rooms are the smallest at 20 square metres, for two. A private terrace is described only for the Tropezian Suite on the top floor, so a terrace has to be requested by name.

  2. Building a family stay.

Connections are the way to fit a family into twelve keys. Some Superior Rooms connect with a Junior Suite, and a Village Junior Suite can connect with a Superior Room or with the Princess Suite, which has a living room that can serve as a second bedroom, two bathrooms and two entrances. For daytime, the Airelles Summer Camp at Château de La Messardière, about ten minutes' drive away, takes children from three, and pick-up and drop-off can be arranged.

  3. The beach is a ride away.

The house has a pool but no sea. Transfers by Mini-Moke run to Jardin Tropezina, the group's beach club on Pampelonne in Ramatuelle, or to the Salon Messardière in town, and a chauffeured Rolls-Royce is also offered for the beach. Sun loungers at Jardin Tropezina are part of the stay but must be reserved; the beach takes bookings from one month ahead and not online, so the concierge is the route for a July weekend.

  4. The quiet months.

Les Délices du Pan Deï lists a closure from 28 October to 18 December, and the official pages do not publish separate opening dates for the hotel itself, so a late-autumn or early-winter stay needs confirming directly. In summer the reverse applies: the Place des Lices and the port are busy just outside, and dinner in the garden is the way to stay out of it. The terrace is sized for a twelve-key house, so a table on a summer weekend is best fixed when the room is booked.

The price question

The money buys a bed inside the village, a door off a street near the Place des Lices that opens onto a garden and pool shared by twelve rooms, plus the Airelles beach and children's camp by car. It does not buy space or sea: the entry rooms are small, the spa is two rooms and a hammam, and the beach is a drive away.

What the money buys

  • A room a short walk from the Place des Lices and the old streets, with no car needed in the evening.
  • A garden pool and terrace restaurant on the scale of a twelve-key house.
  • Mini-Moke transfers and reserved loungers at Jardin Tropezina on Pampelonne, and access to the Summer Camp at La Messardière.

What it leaves out

  • A beach or sea view on site.
  • Space in the entry category: Superior Rooms are 20 m².
  • A full spa: two treatment rooms and a hammam.

Who it suits

It works for a couple or a family who want to walk into Saint-Tropez at night and come back to a quiet garden, and who will take the transfer for beach days. Anyone who wants the sea outside the window or a large spa is better placed on the coast or in the hills.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Hôtel La Ponche

In the old village above the cove of La Ponche, at 5 rue des Remparts: 21 rooms renovated by Fabrizio Casiraghi, four apartments and a house, a restaurant terrace on the sea and a wellness space by PERS.

  • Villa Marie Saint-Tropez

On the hill of Ramatuelle above Pampelonne Bay, run by the Sibuet family: 45 rooms and suites, each with a terrace or balcony onto the sea or gardens, a heated pool set in the rock and a shuttle to the Place des Lices.
