Riviera palaces and farmhouse inns, ski chalets and wine estates, region by region: each one written up in full, with the room to ask for and what it does not do well.

  1. Written, not listed.

Every hotel here has a full portrait of its own: the house, the rooms worth asking for, who it suits and what it does not do well.

  2. Hotels for different trips.

Grand houses next to twelve-room hideaways, region by region, so the choice starts with the stay you want rather than a price grid.

  3. Scores when they mean something.

An Edit score appears once the editors have confirmed it. Rankings are being prepared and are not published yet.

The city

Hotels worth
the journey.

Outside Paris, a great French hotel is usually the reason for the trip rather than a base for it: a palace on the Cap d'Antibes, a farmhouse in the Luberon, a chalet at the foot of the Courchevel pistes, a wine estate outside Bordeaux. Nineteen of them hold France's Palace distinction, more than in Paris.

Each one is written up in full and graded out of ten on the same scale as Paris, so a farmhouse in Provence can be weighed against a palace on the Riviera. Region by region below, and on the map; Paris has its own page.
