Castles were built to keep the world outside their walls. The Château de la Messardière, a fairy tale of towers and red roofs on a hill above the bay of Pampelonne, works the other way round. It keeps a world within reach: a complete Saint-Tropez summer, from the beach to the boules to the last table of the evening, all arranged around the people who sleep there.

What lifts it into the small circle of the world's very best hotels is how personal that world becomes. Airelles can make guests feel known before they have found the way to the pool. Names on writing paper, pillows and bathrobes, down to a robe in the smallest size for the youngest guest; staff who remember those names even with every room taken; managers who take the time to greet guests and see them off. Plenty of palaces are beautiful. Very few make a stay feel as if it had been written for one family.

The estate is built on the same scale. Thirteen hectares of umbrella pines and cypresses fall away towards the sea, crossed by buggies, and the château and its villas hold just over eighty rooms and suites in soft pastels, terracotta and canopy beds. There is a great heated pool with the Mediterranean beyond it, another overlooking the gardens, a quieter lane for proper lengths and an indoor pool in the spa. It is not one spectacular facility surrounded by compromises, but a succession of places that would be destinations in their own right.

Children get a castle of their own inside the castle: a villa of five hundred square metres, with a cinema, a treehouse, pony rides and rooms decorated for pirates and mermaids. This is not a corner of the lobby stocked with colouring pencils. It gets the same imagination as everything else, so the children have their summer and the parents theirs.

The day has its own small ceremony. A Mini Moke, the little open car that seems made for this coast, takes guests down to Jardin Tropezina, the hotel's beach on Pampelonne, where Jean-François Piège cooks for bare feet in the sand; the same trip, and the one into town, can be made in a Rolls-Royce. Much of the day comes with the room, from lunch and the minibar to the packing and unpacking, so the holiday is not a string of transactions. By late afternoon the game is boules in the park, as on the square in Saint-Tropez, only with fewer spectators. Then come the restaurants, Matsuhisa's among them, and a dessert buffet that deserves some attention of its own.

A house this complete has a scale to match. With more than eighty rooms, and families and weddings as part of its summer, it is livelier than the peninsula's small hideaways. The beach is a few minutes away by car, on the open, public sands of Pampelonne, and the smallest rooms, at just twenty square metres, are modest for a palace. Prices sit at the top of a town that is never cheap, and the château closes for the winter.

A castle used to measure its success by how little got in. This one measures it by something much smaller: a bathrobe in a child's size, waiting before the child has arrived.

In the south towers

The Riviera Suites, 60 m², looking out over the Bay of Pampelonne.

Towers above Pampelonne

The towers are younger than they look. The 19th-century house was a wedding gift from a cognac merchant to his daughter Louise, but its present silhouette dates from 1989, when the architect Jean-Claude Rochette restored and enlarged it, mixing Anglo-Moorish, Florentine and Provençal motifs. Airelles reopened it in July 2021; from the terraces, pines and vines run down to the bay.

A Riviera Suite in the south towers

The Riviera Suite is where the château's silhouette becomes the room itself: 60 m² in the south towers, with French doors opening onto a terrace with loungers and the Bay of Pampelonne in view. It sleeps three. The sea-view rooms below it in the château measure half that, and the Junior Suite Plunge Pool trades the bay for a private pool on a garden terrace.

The Summer Camp villa

The children's villa runs on the same timetable as the hotel. Its seven themed rooms include arcade games, a Lego workshop and a nap room for the youngest; outside are a mini-farm where children collect eggs and pools reserved for them alone, with swimming lessons on request. It takes children from three, and membership by day, weekend or week includes meals, snacks and drinks.

Jardin Tropezina on Pampelonne

Down on the sand at Ramatuelle, Jardin Tropezina is a restaurant, bar and beach in one, furnished by the French house iKKim'O, with private loungers each under its own parasol. Jean-François Piège's menu stays with Mediterranean classics: Niçoise salad, grilled langoustine, a Provençal lamb estouffade. There is a Vanille & Lilas boutique, and live music and DJ sets carry the afternoon towards sunset.

Why this one

  1. A whole day included.

    Lunch, minibar, beach loungers, transfers.

  2. A villa for the children.

    500 m², its own pools, a mini-farm.

  3. A beach with a chef.

    Jardin Tropezina on Pampelonne.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. The day is paid for; the evening is not.

Every room page checked lists the same inclusions: breakfast, the minibar, lunch at the La Table de La Messardière buffet or at Jardin Tropezina, hot drinks, non-alcoholic drinks by the pool, laundry for a selection of items, spa access, loungers and parasols on the beach on request, transfers by Rolls-Royce or Mini Moke, even the car washed. None lists dinner, wine with it, spa treatments or the children's club, whose membership is booked separately. The bill gathers after dark.

  2. Thirty square metres, or a tower.

The sea-view and poolside rooms in the château measure 30 m², and an older 20 m² Superior Room page is absent from the current list of categories. Space arrives in steps: the Junior Suite Plunge Pool adds a 4 m² pool on a garden terrace at 45 m²; the Riviera Suite takes 60 m² in the south towers with the bay in view; Louise and Victoire give two bedrooms around a private pool; La Bastide is a house for eight with its own kitchen.

  3. Each pool has its own public.

The estate divides its water by age and purpose. The heated Terrace Pool is reserved for hotel guests; the lap pool sits apart among terraced gardens for swimming before breakfast; the 25-metre Belvedere pool, the newest, looks over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Children have pools of their own at the summer camp, reserved for them and supervised, while the indoor pool in the 1,000 m² spa is for adults only. Families and couples can share an estate without sharing a pool.

  4. Evenings are a choice between terraces.

Lunch is settled by the room rate, so the decisions come at night. Matsuhisa, with a Japanese-Peruvian menu designed by Nobu Matsuhisa, sits on the château terrace facing Pampelonne; Palladio cooks Italian and Mediterranean food for families, looking over the southern hills, and finishes with a Cédric Grolet dessert; La Table de La Messardière turns bistro in the evening. Les Tables du Jardin seats six to twenty in the kitchen garden. Town is a transfer away, not a walk.

The price question

The rate sits at the very top of an expensive peninsula, but it buys closer to a full day than a room: breakfast, lunch on the terrace or the beach, the minibar, loungers at Jardin Tropezina, transfers and the spa all come listed with each category checked. What it does not buy is the evening, treatments, the children's club or space at entry level: the smallest bookable rooms are 30 m². The real value begins with a suite.

What the money buys

  • Lunch, minibar, beach loungers and Rolls-Royce or Mini Moke transfers.
  • Thirteen hectares with several pools, one of them 25 metres long.
  • A 1,000 m² spa with an adults-only indoor pool.

What it leaves out

  • Dinner, wine and spa treatments.
  • Children's club membership, booked separately.
  • Room to spread out below suite level.

Who it suits

Book it for a family summer or a full week in which the hotel, its pools and its beach are the plan, in a suite or larger. Look elsewhere for a short stay in a small room, or for a town house a stroll from the port.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Hôtel Byblos, Saint-Tropez

Eighty-six rooms and suites in the centre of town, with Byblos Beach on Pampelonne and a winter closure.

  • Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel

Six hectares of gardens at the tip of Cap-Ferrat, the heated seawater pool of Club Dauphin and the Sea Explorers Kids Club.
