Two kindsof souvenir.

Savoie, France45°27′ N 6°59′ E

French uses a single word for a keepsake and a memory, and luxury hotels have long dealt in the first kind: the bathrobe, the scented candle, the monogrammed pen. Airelles Val d'Isère, the least known and least theatrical house in the Airelles collection, hands those out too, nightly and in quantity. Its real business is the second kind of souvenir, and in pursuit of it the hotel goes much further than a ski hotel strictly needs to.

The setting is a skier's town rather than a showman's. Val d'Isère is a stone village at 1,850 metres on the edge of the Vanoise National Park, with the Olympic downhill plunging down the Face de Bellevarde above its rooftops. On its snow front stood the Brussel's, an old favourite of the resort, rebuilt and reopened in 2019 behind a sober face of wood and stone. Inside, Christophe Tollemer chose timelessness over costume: great fireplaces, a monumental staircase, velvet banquettes and period furniture, warm rather than whimsical.

The keepsakes arrive on cue. At dusk candlelight takes over the lobby, along with a table of homemade sweets that never seems to empty, and in Le Fumoir, the cigar lounge, guests pour their own drinks at an honour bar and note them down. Each night something new appears on the pillow, ski socks, pyjamas, a bottle of perfume, and a ski jacket in the house colours waits in the wardrobe, to be worn and kept.

The other kind of souvenir begins where most ski hotels stop. On the hotel's all-in formula, the lift pass and the equipment are merely the overture. Each day brings an expedition, included and arranged down to the gloves: a sled pulled by a team of dogs, snowmobiles across frozen plateaus, snowshoes through silent larches, and, most improbable of all, a dive beneath the frozen surface of Lake Tignes, a short drive up the road.

That dive is the closest thing the Alps have to a magic trick. A hole is cut through the ice with a chainsaw, a line runs back to the surface, and below lies water barely above freezing, lit by a milky, diffuse glow. Every breath rises, meets the frozen ceiling and spreads across it like quicksilver, a moving mirror overhead. By evening the same guests sit over fondue at La Grande Ourse, an inn on the slopes since 1936, beneath a protected fresco of stars attributed to the painter Jean Fautrier.

A week built for memories can start to feel like a programme. There are more sweets, gifts, courses and expeditions than any guest can do justice to, the lake decides when its ice is ready, and the dive asks for nerve as well as a drysuit. Beyond the door, Val d'Isère remains a lively, unpolished ski town, loved by the British and loud after dark, with more rental shops than boutiques.

Years later, the pyjamas will have worn thin and the jacket will hang forgotten at the back of a cupboard. What stays is the quicksilver light under the ice and a team of dogs running into the dusk. In French, both count as souvenirs. Only one kind ever needed a suitcase.

Under the stars

La Grande Ourse takes its name from the constellation Ursa Major, and a fresco of stars inside the restaurant is protected as French heritage.

Le Bar Rouge

Le Bar Rouge is the hotel's piano bar, in the heart of the house: dimmed lamps, red and black tones, patterned walls, plush sofas and armchairs around a crackling fire, and live music in the evening. It serves cocktails with sweet and savoury snacks from the afternoon on. Le Fumoir, the cigar lounge, is the hotel's other room for after dark.

La Grande Ourse

A few steps from the hotel at the foot of the slopes, La Grande Ourse is a chalet of carved wood, plaid carpet and a stone fireplace hung with copper pans, its walls lined with photographs of past patrons. A balcony overlooks the lower dining room. The menu is Savoyard: fondue, raclette, tartiflette and croziflette, with a terrace on the pistes by day.

A Deluxe Junior Suite

The Deluxe Junior Suite is on the slope side of the hotel: 46 to 52 m² for two, with the bedroom and sitting area run together and a balcony facing the pistes and the Bellevarde slope. The bathroom has a shower-hammam and a bathtub. Rooms on the other side, such as the Premier Rooms, look over the village instead.

The Guerlain spa pool

The Airelles Spa by Guerlain covers 1,200 m² under arches and exposed beams, in ochre and beige. Its centre is a 20-metre indoor pool lined with loungers; children have their own pool built as a grotto. Around them are a hammam, sauna and jacuzzi, a gym with TechnoGym equipment, Guerlain treatment rooms and an osteopath, Tom Pichaud.

Why this one

  1. Skis on at the door.

Direct access to 300 km of pistes.

  2. A week of outings.

Dogs, snowmobiles and an ice dive.

  3. A 20-metre pool.

In a 1,200 m² Guerlain spa.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Choose the side of the house first.

The hotel faces two ways. Premier Rooms, the entry category at 32 to 40 m², have a private balcony facing the historic village. The Deluxe Junior Suite, at 46 to 52 m², sits on the ski-slope side, with a balcony looking straight up to the Bellevarde slope and a bathroom with a shower-hammam. Anyone who wants to watch the snow front and the skiers coming down should book a slope-side category and ask for it to be confirmed in writing.

  2. Read what the rate includes.

The All-in Escape is a named offer, not the standard rate. It adds breakfast, lunch and dinner (drinks excluded), ski passes, equipment from the Bernard Orcel ski room and daily activities for adults and children, among them dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice diving. The room pages also list daily activities among the services included with every stay, so it is worth asking the concierges before booking which outings each rate covers, and which need a supplement.

  3. The ice dive depends on the lake.

Lake Tignes lies at 2,100 metres, fed by the Grande Motte glacier, and its ice reaches one to two metres in winter. The hotel arranges a private transfer, or guests can ski over; equipment is supplied, one instructor dives alongside and a second stays on the surface. Dives run by day or at night, and diving as a pair is offered only to qualified divers when weather and safety allow. Keep a spare day in the week in case conditions close the lake.

  4. Families: apartment or chalet.

Larger groups have three options beyond the suites. The five top-floor apartments run from one to four bedrooms, with fireplaces; L'Appartement Montmayeur, the penthouse, sleeps eight. Chalet Schuss, a few steps from the hotel, has 250 m² on two floors, four bedrooms each with its own bathroom and dressing room, and a separate kitchen. Children use the Winter Camp, the Kids Club, a private cinema and their own grotto pool in the spa; teenagers have an arcade corner.

The price question

The money buys a winter week organised from the door: a ski-in, ski-out address on the snow front, a ski room, a large spa and a concierge team that books the dogs, the snowmobiles and the dive. It does not buy a year-round hotel, nor a quiet village: the season runs from December to April, and Val d'Isère outside stays busy. The real comparison is a good chalet plus a resort activity desk.

What the money buys

  • Direct access to the slopes and a Bernard Orcel ski room in the hotel.
  • Daily activities for adults and children listed among the included services.
  • A 1,200 m² Guerlain spa with a 20-metre pool and a separate grotto pool for children.

What it leaves out

  • Any stay outside the winter season.
  • Drinks on the All-in Escape, which covers meals, passes, equipment and activities.
  • A guaranteed ice dive: the lake and the weather decide.

Who it suits

Book it for a family ski week, on the All-in Escape or half board, in a slope-side suite or an apartment, with one spare day left for the ice dive. A couple looking for a quiet weekend away from a busy resort, or a stay outside December to April, is better placed elsewhere.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Le K2 Palace

A hamlet of wood and stone on the Cospillot piste at Courchevel 1850: a main house of 29 rooms and suites, six Suites-Chalets and four chalets with their own pools, linked by an indoor passage, with the Goji Spa and a Kids Klub.

  • Four Seasons Resort Megève

A ski-in, ski-out resort at about 1,300 metres on Mont d'Arbois: 55 rooms and suites, a two-level wine cellar, a 900 m² spa with an indoor-outdoor pool, and a kids' club and teen zone.
