In the village, fifty metres from the lift.

Haute-Savoie, France45°54′ N 6°25′ E

A farm in the Aravis, sometime in the Middle Ages. The landlord's man arrives to measure the milk, because the rent depends on it. The farmer milks his cows, but only halfway. The inspector notes his figure and leaves. The farmer sits back down on his stool and milks again. That second milking is smaller, creamier and nobody else's business, and it becomes reblochon, from reblocher, to pinch the udder twice. The Aravis has kept the best for itself ever since. Au Cœur du Village is that trick, turned into a hotel.

On a map of the French Alps, half the resorts were born on a drawing board and poured in concrete in a single decade. La Clusaz grew the slow way: church first, farms around it, lifts much later. It is also a discreet bastion of old money. Families from Lyon, Annecy and Geneva have skied here for generations without ever feeling the need to tell anyone. In 2010 the Pollet-Villards, an Aravis family for as long as anyone remembers, put the valley's only hotel of this calibre right beside the church. A father and son built it. Locals, naturally.

From the street, it barely raises its voice, a big chalet of timber and stone that slips into the village. Inside, the volume goes up a notch. Blond wood, local slate, sixty rooms and suites with balconies aimed at the Aravis peaks, and on the walls the work of Ludovic Di Orio, an artist from just down the road. Families take the suites that sleep five. The cigar crowd takes the English smoking room after dinner.

The mountain is fifty metres away. Skis are fitted and boots laced in the basement, and two minutes later the first lift is already climbing. Coming back is just as fast: through the door, down to the Cristal Spa, themed on the crystals buried in these mountains, into the pool or the hammam, and finally up to the bar, where the fire finishes the job.

Then comes dinner, and the valley's second trick. At Le Cœur, reblochon arrives in every form, tartiflette included, a dish the reblochon makers themselves turned into a hit in the 1980s to sell more cheese. Upstairs at Le Cin5, executive chef Vincent Deforce, whose wife's family comes from Mauritius, smuggles in the Indian Ocean: smoked marlin with pineapple, langoustine in a Mauritian shellfish cream, sweet potato slipped into the tartiflette. A spice route in a cheese valley. The farmers would have approved.

Not everything here is so well hidden. The village sits low, at barely 1,100 metres, and in a mild winter the lower slopes show it. On Saturdays half of Lyon seems to arrive at once. Sixty rooms make this a bigger heart than the name suggests, and the interiors play it safe, handsome but never daring.

The landlords never found out about the second milking. Most of the skiing world still has not found out about La Clusaz. The crowds drive past on their way to the famous names, and the Aravis does what it has always done: keeps the richest part for itself, and says nothing.

Behind the name

Gaston Pollet-Villard began his career importing semi-precious stones. Amethyst, rose quartz and rock crystal from that trade are set through the spa's wellness area and treatment rooms, and gave the Cristal Spa its name.

A Privilege suite

The Privilege suites, around 48 m², are built to divide. A bedroom with a king-size bed, spa bath and balcony sits beside a second space with a single bed and room for an extra one, with its own shower room. Removable walls and separate entrances turn the suite into two communicating rooms, so older children or a friend keep a door of their own.

The Cristal Spa pool

The pool is heated to 30° and faces large windows under timber volumes, with a counter-current jet, swan-neck fountains, a bubble bath and leg hydrojets. A mezzanine above holds loungers and herbal tea; beyond are a rock-crystal hammam, a sauna with coloured light and five treatment rooms. Resident children use the pool at regulated times.

Le Cœur

Le Cœur serves the breakfast buffet and a seasonal dinner open to non-residents, in a room where glass doors show the brigade at work. Its glass-walled cheese cellar, stocked by local cheesemakers, holds Reblochon, Tomme des Bauges, Moelleux du Revard, Chevrotin and Persillé des Aravis. Half-board guests choose their dish from the menu each day, with supplements on some.

Le Cin5

Le Cin5 occupies the Winter Garden. Dinner begins with the raw produce shown under a bell jar and the menu announced as riddles; only the plates reveal it. Vincent Deforce sets Savoie produce against spices and products from Mauritius. The cheese trolley is filled weekly at Maison Paccard's ageing cellar in Manigod, and part of the bread is baked in the house.

Why this one

  1. Skis on in the house.

The lifts are 50 metres away.

  2. A suite for five.

The 80 m² split-level Family Suite.

  3. Two kitchens, one chef.

    Le Cœur and Le Cin5.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Only one suite type sleeps five.

The suites page gives five guests only to the Split-level Family Suite, 80 m²: a living room onto the balcony with a sofa bed, a master bedroom below, and upstairs a second bedroom plus a single bed on a mezzanine. The Single-level Family Suite, 60 m², takes three or four; Privilege suites take four. The services page says family suites hold up to six, so confirm the number in writing. Larger groups have Chalet Le Cœur, with its own kitchen and private access to the spa.

  2. A balcony starts with the suites.

The nine Junior rooms list no balcony, and the Privilege rooms list an office corner or a balcony, so it is not guaranteed. Every suite category lists one, facing the mountains or the village. The three Junior Sommet suites sit on the top floor with balconies towards the peaks, and the Privilege Prestige suites look over the ski slopes and the Étale and Beauregard massifs. For a view of the Aravis, book a suite and ask which side it faces.

  3. Plan it as a winter address.

The official pages describe a winter house: Le Cœur and the bar are listed as open every day in winter, and the 2026–27 season's first offer covers stays from 11 December. A spring page carries the season into March. The site publishes no summer programme and no service days for Le Cin5. Anyone planning a summer or shoulder-season stay, or a dinner at Le Cin5 on a particular evening, should confirm opening with the hotel first.

  4. Children: book around the school holidays.

The hotel's children's programme runs during the winter school holidays, when a 160 m² lounge is set aside for them with entertainers in the evening; outside those weeks it is not described. The village Piou Piou ski club takes children from three, and a daycare is nearby. Access for resident children to the spa pool is regulated, so families should ask reception for the times before arrival rather than count on a swim after skiing.

The price question

The money buys position: a house in the middle of an old village, the lifts fifty metres away, two restaurants, a spa and a ski room under one roof, run by a family from the valley. It does not buy altitude or a slope-side door, the village sits low, and the smallest rooms have neither balcony nor much space. The comparison is with the larger resort hotels around Megève.

What the money buys

  • A ski room with rental, lockers and boot warmers, 50 metres from the first lifts.
  • Suites with removable walls and separate entrances, and a duplex family suite for five.
  • Two kitchens under one chef: Le Cœur for an easy dinner, Le Cin5 for a long one.

What it leaves out

  • A balcony in the Junior rooms, or a guaranteed one in the Privilege rooms.
  • Skiing from the door: the lifts are a short walk across the village.
  • A published summer programme or service days for Le Cin5.

Who it suits

Book it for a week of winter skiing with children in a suite, or for a couple who want the village, the spa and one dinner at Le Cin5. A group wanting ski-in, ski-out at altitude, or a summer stay without checking dates first, is better placed elsewhere.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Four Seasons Resort Megève

A ski-in, ski-out resort at about 1,300 metres on Mont d'Arbois: 55 rooms and suites, a two-level wine cellar, a 900 m² spa with an indoor-outdoor pool, and a kids' club and teen zone.

  • Les Fermes de Marie

Nine connected chalets of rebuilt farm timber in a two-hectare park near the centre of Megève: about 70 rooms and suites, a 1,000 m² Pure Altitude spa with 13 treatment rooms, and a shuttle to the Chamois gondola.
