The Auberge du Jeu de Paume stands where Chantilly's gendarmerie used to be, which seems fitting for a town that runs on rules. It opened in 2012 in the gardens of the Domaine de Chantilly, built in eighteenth-century style to blend into the estate. The name comes from the old real-tennis court next door. It has ninety-two rooms and suites, and a weekend here is largely a matter of learning the local rules and finding out how agreeable they are.
Rule one is that horses go first. Some 2,600 racehorses live in and around Chantilly, and at first light their strings clatter through the streets towards the training grounds; the sandy rides in the forest are theirs until lunchtime, after which guests may follow on bicycles. Rule two is that nothing in the château moves. The duc d'Aumale left the estate to the Institut de France on condition that not a single work be lent, so the Raphaels still hang where he placed them, across the lawn from the hotel.
Rule three concerns the cream. Crème Chantilly is whipped cream with sugar; anything plainer is just cream. The château's old kitchens, where legend says it was invented for a royal banquet, still make it to the old recipe, and having it at teatime, a few steps from where it was born, is one of the pleasanter obligations a guest can have.
The hotel's own rules are gentle. The rooms come in toile de Jouy, wine red or blue, with Italian marble in the suites; the ones to ask for face the gardens of the estate, since others look onto the town or the courtyard, and the quiet outside the windows is the country kind. Evenings gather in the lounge bar and at Le Jardin d'Hiver, the hotel's bistro, where dinner might bring octopus with celeriac and nashi pear, and the baba arrives, inevitably, with a cloud of Chantilly.
The Valmont spa is where the day ends after a morning in the forest or the château. Its heated indoor pool and steam room sit behind Moorish arches, and children may use the pool only at set hours, so for much of the day it belongs to the adults. A long weekend here falls into an easy pattern: horses or paintings in the morning, the pool in the afternoon, dinner without leaving the estate.
Outside, race days in June fill the town with hats and traffic, and it is worth checking the calendar before booking. The drive from Paris takes well under an hour, which makes Chantilly an easy weekend for horse lovers, for anyone who wants old masters without the crowds of the Louvre, and for people who have always eaten the cream without ever seeing the place.
The gendarmes left years ago. The rules they left behind are the kind guests are happy to keep, the one about the cream above all.
Next door
The hotel takes its name from the Jeu de Paume, the real-tennis court Louis Joseph de Bourbon had built on the estate in 1757. It now displays monumental paintings from the Musée Condé.
Rooms on the garden side
The Prestige Terrace Rooms, 37 m², open onto private terraces above the château gardens and the Fountain of Beauvais. Like the rest of the house they are dressed in toile de Jouy, in burgundy or blue, with Louis XV armchairs and heavy drapes. Each takes two adults and a child under twelve; the suites add Italian marble bathrooms.
Le Jardin d'Hiver
The hotel's bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day in a bright room that opens onto the patio, with blue upholstered armchairs and a horse sculpture among the tables. The menu follows the seasons, à la carte or set, in a simple and refined French register, and outside diners come as well as guests. In fine weather, tables move onto the patio.
The Lounge Bar
The Lounge Bar is the hotel's evening room: leather sofas, velvet chairs, wooden bookcases and an open fire, all in deep reds. It serves drinks and classic snacks through the day, a list of classic and signature cocktails, wines and champagnes, and tea at weekends. On Thursday evenings it holds an Italian aperitivo with spritz and antipasti, spilling onto the patio.
The Valmont pool
Spa Valmont covers 600 m² in soft, diffused light. The heated relaxation pool, eight metres by three and at most 1.40 m deep, lies behind Moorish openings, with a whirlpool, steam room and sauna beside it. Five treatment rooms, one of them double, offer Valmont care, including the Soin Cavalier, created for the hotel to ease tension after riding.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
The category decides the view.
Deluxe and Premium rooms and the Junior Suites look onto the town of Chantilly or the inner courtyard; the château gardens begin with the Premium Park View Room. The Prestige Terrace rooms and suites add a private terrace or balcony over the gardens and the Fountain of Beauvais, and the Condé and Diane Executive Suites have a garden terrace too. Premium Suites face either the town or the park, so it is worth asking which one is being offered.
02
The pool keeps family hours.
Children under sixteen may use the Valmont pool only in two windows, early in the morning and in the evening, always with an adult. Families with young swimmers should plan the day around them; adults looking for quiet will have the water to themselves for most of it. The pool is also modest, eight metres by three, and closes for annual maintenance from 4 to 9 January 2027, with the hotel warning that the closure may run longer.
03
Come by train, and check the races.
Chantilly-Gouvieux station is around 25 minutes from Paris by train, and the concierge arranges a shuttle between the station and the hotel when it is booked in advance. By car, central Paris is about 45 minutes away, and the hotel has an underground car park and valet parking. The racecourse at the foot of the Grandes Écuries holds the Prix de Diane and the Prix du Jockey Club, so check the racing calendar before fixing a weekend.
04
Book the bistro with the room.
Le Jardin d'Hiver is the hotel's restaurant, and it serves outside diners as well as guests, so a table for dinner is best reserved together with the room. It is a bistro rather than a gastronomic dining room: French cooking from a seasonal menu, à la carte or set, with a patio for fine weather. On a quieter evening the Lounge Bar serves classic snacks, and room service runs around the clock for a dinner in the room.
The price question
The money buys a night inside the Domaine de Chantilly, a lawn away from the château and the Grandes Écuries, with a spa and a bistro under the same roof. It does not buy a garden view by default: the entry categories face the town or the courtyard, and dinner is a bistro, not a destination restaurant. The real comparison is a day trip from Paris by train, which the estate makes easy.
What the money buys
A bed between the château gardens and the Grandes Écuries, inside the estate.
Access to the Valmont spa, its indoor pool, steam room and sauna, included for hotel guests.
A Clefs d'Or concierge for riding, cycling and visits around the estate.
What it leaves out
A garden view in the Deluxe, Premium and Junior Suite categories.
A gastronomic restaurant: Le Jardin d'Hiver is a bistro.
A large pool: the spa's measures eight metres by three, with set hours for children.
Who it suits
Book it for a weekend that pairs the château and the stables with the spa, in a Premium Park View or Prestige Terrace room. Families with young swimmers should check the pool's children's hours first, and anyone travelling mainly for a gastronomic dinner should look elsewhere.
Who should spend elsewhere
Royal Hainaut
The former general hospital of Valenciennes, begun in 1752 and opened as a hotel in 2019: 79 rooms and suites around a 3,500 m² courtyard of red brick and blue stone, with a 1,200 m² spa and a vaulted pool.
Les Suites de l'Île Barbe
A few suites and rooms on the private part of Île Barbe in the Saône at Lyon, kept by a family living on the property since 1891, with a 3,000 m² park and no restaurant on site.
