In one of the bedrooms at Château de Maubreuil, the four-poster is draped like a Mongolian tent and the walls are papered with scenes from the steppe. It is a fair introduction to a hotel made for escapists. Maubreuil itself is a château in a large park at Carquefou, ten minutes from the centre of Nantes, and each of its seventeen rooms is themed on a place its owners love.

Those owners are Philippe Rousse, a Nantes entrepreneur who had dreamed of rescuing a château since childhood, and his partner Virginie. They came across this one almost by chance and spent seven years restoring it, long enough to go round the globe several times, before filling it with things brought home from their own travels. Some of those finds sit in a cabinet of curiosities in a lounge at the back, with price tags attached, for guests who would like a souvenir without the flight.

Travel, as it happens, is part of the house's story. The château once belonged to the family of the marquis de Dion, a motoring pioneer born here in Carquefou. He crossed the line first in the earliest great motoring competition, from Paris to Rouen, only to be refused the top prize because his steam car needed a stoker. Guests today arrive in less controversial vehicles.

Choosing a room here feels rather like scrolling through a streaming service late at night, wondering where to go next. Tonight it might be Minuit à Paris, all leopard print and flashes of red, tomorrow a dose of English restraint in the Prince de Galles, and the suitcase can stay shut in between.

The escape carries on outside, where the gardens wander from one country to the next as though the remote had been left on shuffle, until a bamboo forest closes in around a gazebo where massages are given. On grey days there is somewhere to hide underground, because the spa fills the old vaulted cellars and its two private suites, one with a sauna and hot tub, the other with a hammam, mean nobody has to share the bubbles with a stranger.

The evening brings one more change of scene, this time to the Second Empire, as La Table du Marquis serves dinner beneath huge mirrors and carved fireplaces, with a glass of Muscadet from a cellar of more than twelve hundred wines. Couples will find it a romantic hideaway, with Nantes and its giant mechanical elephant an easy drive away. Anyone hoping for deep countryside should know, though, that the real world waits just beyond the park wall.

At Maubreuil, a night in Mongolia ends with breakfast ten minutes from Nantes, without a single passport check. As escapes go, it is a remarkably short commute.

From the grounds

La Ferme de Maubreuil, a farm on the château's own estate, grows the vegetables and herbs that La Table du Marquis cooks with.

Mongolie mon Amour

A Signature room of 38 m², themed on the Mongolian steppe: a four-poster hung with white canvas like the inside of a tent, walls papered with crowded travel scenes, and a black marble bathroom with a freestanding bath and a separate shower. The bed is 180 cm wide; the room sleeps two and, like every room here, accepts pets.

The spa in the cellars

Spa Le Maubreuil fills the château's old vaulted cellars: whitewashed vaults, pink-toned upholstery, carved figures along the passage. There are four treatment rooms, three of them for two, a boudoir lounge and a Cinq Mondes shop. Two private spaces were added: a sauna with a Nordic bath, and a hammam. Day visitors use the spa too.

Gardens of the world

The park is planted as a sequence of gardens from other places, with bamboo, raked gravel and cloud-pruned shrubs in one corner and red footbridges in another, plus an aviary, an orchard, vines, a citrus walk and a mandala vegetable garden. From June to September massages are also given outdoors, in a gazebo in the gardens.

La Table du Marquis

The château's restaurant, under chef Bertrand Patté, cooks French dishes with spices and techniques from elsewhere, using vegetables and herbs from the Ferme de Maubreuil on the estate. It serves breakfast daily, lunch on weekdays, dinner every evening and a buffet brunch at weekends, and takes outside guests on booking, so a table is worth reserving.

Why this one

  1. A room is a trip.

    Seventeen destinations, one park.

  2. A spa underground.

Cinq Mondes in the vaulted cellars.

  3. A farm for a kitchen.

La Table du Marquis cooks its own.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Know which building the room is in.

Most rooms are in the château itself, but the three Apartments and the Mille et Une Nuits suite are listed as outside the main building, and the Apartments are reached by a staircase. Prince de Galles and Retour de Voyage are duplexes, and Lord of London is also up stairs. The room the hotel lists as accessible for reduced mobility is Carnaval à Venise. Anyone who wants the château around them, or who avoids steps, should name the room when booking.

  2. Summer and winter are different hotels.

The two outdoor pools open from May to September, and the Salon Nomade, the poolside bar under its canvas, closes with them; outdoor massages in the garden gazebo run from June to September. Outside those months the stay moves indoors: the spa in the cellars, Bar Zélélé, the wine workshops in the chapel. A late-autumn or winter booking still has the gardens, but it is a stay built around the château's interiors.

  3. Reserve the private spa spaces.

The spa in the cellars is small: four treatment rooms, three of them doubles. Its two private spaces are different things. The Odyssée Boréale is a private thermal circuit with a sauna and a Nordic bath; the Odyssée d'Orient is a private hammam for oriental rituals. The spa is also open to day visitors, who book the same rooms. For either private space, or a treatment for two, book when the room is booked, not on arrival.

  4. Nantes is close, but not on foot.

The château sits behind its park wall in Carquefou, on the edge of the city, so the centre of Nantes is a drive rather than a walk. The hotel's chauffeur service covers Nantes Atlantique airport and Nantes station; for evenings in town, plan the return journey in advance rather than counting on finding a ride back late at night. For a stay that is mostly about the city, the sister hotel, Maison Maubreuil, has thirteen rooms in Nantes's historic centre.

The price question

The money buys theatre on the edge of a city: a themed room, a spa in the cellars, gardens and two summer pools, all inside one park wall. It does not buy deep countryside, and the outdoor half of the place is seasonal. The real comparison is a stay in Nantes itself plus a day in the vineyards.

What the money buys

  • A room themed down to the wallpaper, in one of seventeen variations.
  • A spa in vaulted cellars with private sauna and hammam spaces.
  • Dinner every evening a staircase away, from a kitchen with its own farm.

What it leaves out

  • Outdoor pools and the poolside bar between October and April.
  • Countryside quiet: the city begins beyond the park.
  • More than one room listed as accessible for reduced mobility.

Who it suits

Book it for a weekend for two that wants a change of scene without a long journey, ideally between May and September when the pools and garden massages run. Anyone after rural silence, or a family needing a step-free apartment, is better placed elsewhere.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Fleur de Loire

Chef Christophe Hay's hotel on the Loire quay in Blois, built around his cooking, with a Sisley spa.

  • Les Sources de Cheverny

Forty-nine rooms and suites in the Château du Breuil and two garden houses near Cheverny, with two restaurants, Le Favori and L'Auberge, and a Caudalie spa.
