A clubthat grew up.
Savoie, France45°27′ N 6°59′ E
Strictly speaking, Club Med Val d'Isère has no place on these pages. It has more than two hundred rooms, a buffet at its heart and a team perfectly capable of getting a dining room on its feet to dance. It is here anyway, because it offers a kind of luxury most travellers have never heard of, and because nearly everyone inside caught it the same way: from their parents.
The condition dates back to 1950, when a Belgian named Gérard Blitz pitched army-surplus tents on a beach in Mallorca and invented a holiday where everything was included, strangers ate at shared tables and guests and staff were on first-name terms. Club Med reached Val d'Isère in 1962, and generations of children learned to ski here while their parents learned to do nothing at all. Those children grew up, acquired opinions about thread counts and came back with children of their own. Club Med had to grow up with them, and rebuilt the village as the first resort of its upmarket Exclusive Collection in the Alps.
What it kept is the setting, arguably the loveliest in the resort: a hamlet of stone-and-wood chalets in its own corner of Val d'Isère, with skis clipped on outside and mountains on every side. Rooms are warm, wooden and mostly generous. At La Légende, the bar of old wood where the champagne starts at six, live music fills the evening, and outside on the terrace of Le Chalet, braziers flicker as the sun drops behind the peaks.
The big table still matters most. At Le Bellevarde, the buffet has become a market hall, with a bakery, a fishmonger, Italian charcuterie and a cheese cellar with its own fromager, and a young, thoroughly international crowd sits at long tables where a Danish father, a couple from São Paulo and a family from Lyon compare the day's runs before dessert. Les Millésimes offers à la carte cooking and a serious cellar for nights off, but the buffet is where the evening happens.
The same spirit follows guests up the mountain. Ski lessons with local instructors come included, grouped by level, so skiing becomes a social event: by midweek, the class has its own table at lunch. Club Med invented the Mini Club, and still looks after children from four, with separate clubs for teenagers, an indoor pool and a Cinq Mondes spa for whoever ends up child-free.
This is a club, not a hideaway, and that decides everything. Two hundred rooms bring energy rather than hush, stays run Sunday to Sunday, group lessons follow a timetable and the evening entertainment is not optional for the ears. The village sits a shuttle ride from the centre, and the bill has grown up even faster than the guests.
Regulars like to say they were infected as children, and no cure has ever been found. Downstairs, in the Mini Club, a four-year-old is learning the house dance moves. In twenty-five years she will be back, with children of her own, and she will expect even more.
Since 1962
Club Med came to Val d'Isère in 1962. The village was rebuilt from the existing walls in 2022 and inaugurated in June 2023 as the first Exclusive Collection resort in the Alps.
La Légende
The resort's main lounge and bar runs under a long timbered roof: old wood, aged leather, alcoves and shelves of objects found at flea markets, with vintage tributes to Val d'Isère's skiing past. A stage at the far end takes musicians, DJ sets and the evening shows, and cocktails, canapés and champagne by the glass come with the all-inclusive evening.
Le Bellevarde
The main restaurant is laid out as a market hall in tribute to Val d'Isère's architecture. Around it stand the bakery's bread oven, a fishmonger's stall, an Italian delicatessen and a cheese cellar, with cooks working at à la minute stations of Alpine and international dishes. Plates come composed or to share, and no table needs booking.
A Deluxe room with balcony
Every room is a Deluxe or a suite, and most are larger than 30 m². The Deluxe Room with balcony has a wooden headboard, warm red and marron-glacé tones, soft lighting and a modern bathroom; families choose among Family, Junior Family and interconnecting versions. An espresso machine, premium teas and a minibar of soft drinks come in every room.
The indoor pool
The heated indoor pool is 17 metres long, lined with red and white tiles and lit by tall bay windows, with a relaxation area and loungers; a sauna stands beside it and a hot tub on the outdoor terrace, both included. The Cinq Mondes spa next door has eight treatment rooms, a duo room and a tea area.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Plan the week from Sunday.
Stays run Sunday to Sunday, and the rest of the week is built on that. The included lift pass is valid Monday to Saturday on a seven-night stay, group lessons run Monday to Friday, and beginners must start on the Monday: arrive late and a place in the beginners' group may be lost. Skiing on the day of arrival needs a day pass bought on site, and the Mini Club is closed on Sundays, so the first and last days belong to the family.
02
Nothing here for the under-fours.
The resort offers neither Baby Club Med nor Petit Club Med, so organised care begins with Mini Club Med+ at four, the same age as the first ESF ski lessons on the snow garden at the foot of the resort. Rooms come with a cot, a baby bath and a bottle warmer, and the restaurant keeps a baby corner, but a toddler stays with a parent all day. Older children are better served: Teens Club Med from eleven, Club Med Chill Pass from fourteen.
03
Choose the room by how it sleeps.
The categories differ less in size than in layout. A Family Deluxe Room has two sleeping areas divided by a curtain; in a Junior Family Deluxe the living room converts into a child's bedroom; in a Junior Family Suite a child under eight sleeps in the living room. Only the Master Family Suite gives parents and children separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom or shower room. Interconnecting Deluxe rooms with balconies suit larger groups. Suites include continental breakfast served in the room.
04
Book Les Millésimes for the quiet night.
Le Bellevarde needs no booking and is where most evenings happen, with La Légende's music and shows to follow. Les Millésimes is the alternative: a smaller dining room styled on a high-mountain refuge, taken on booking, with French and Italian Alpine cooking and wines from its own cellar. Its bar next door has a grand piano and canapés. Reserve a table early in the week, since one evening there changes the rhythm of a stay spent otherwise at the long tables.
The price question
The money buys a week in which almost nothing has to be arranged: lift pass, ESF lessons, every meal and drink, champagne in the evening and childcare from four are inside one booking, at 1,850 metres in Val d'Isère. It does not buy quiet or flexibility. Two hundred and sixteen rooms, fixed Sunday arrivals and group timetables set the pace, and spa treatments, ski hire and private instructors cost extra.
What the money buys
Lift pass and ESF group lessons for every level, Monday to Friday, without a separate booking.
Clubs for children from four to seventeen, with supervised ski lessons in the mornings and afternoons.
All meals at Le Bellevarde, drinks throughout the day and champagne by the glass in the evening.
What it leaves out
Any club for children under four.
Flexible arrival days: the week runs Sunday to Sunday.
Included spa treatments, ski hire or private lessons.
Who it suits
Book it for a full week with children between four and seventeen, or a group with mixed ski levels who want lessons arranged and evenings together. A couple looking for a short stay, a quiet dining room every night or a hotel in the old village is better placed elsewhere in Val d'Isère.
Who should spend elsewhere
Airelles Val d'Isère
A ski-in, ski-out hotel on the snow front of Val d'Isère, with 41 rooms and suites, five apartments, several restaurants including Matsuhisa and Le Piaf, a 1,200 m² Guerlain spa and the Winter Camp for children.
Le Blizzard
The Cerboneschi family's hotel on the main street of Val d'Isère since 1963: 70 rooms and suites in a wood-and-stone chalet, three restaurants, a heated outdoor pool facing the Bellevarde, and the snow front 150 metres away.
