Twenty-eight rooms,one family tree.

Moselle, France49°25′ N 6°23′ E

Most hotels hand their guests a number. The Domaine de la Klauss hands them a relative. All twenty-eight rooms and suites are named after members of the Keff family, and the grandest is Simone, at the top of the tower, with a round bathtub at the foot of the bed and the hills of Lorraine on three sides. Nobody here asks for room twelve. The question at reception is whether Simone is available.

The names are there because the family still is. The Keffs have fed travellers in Montenach since 1869, and their old farm inn, the Auberge de la Klauss, stands eighty metres from the hotel. Alexandre Keff started working there at four years old, carrying plates in a little Lorraine smock for twenty cents a time. He grew up to be an airline pilot, and when the banks turned down his plans for a hotel, he paid for it out of his salary. He still flies for Luxair. The Klauss may well be the only hotel in France paid for at cruising altitude.

It opened in 2016 on a hill in the far north-eastern corner of Lorraine, where France runs out of room between Luxembourg and Germany, with Metz and Luxembourg City both within an hour's drive. Alexandre had it built in the yellow stone of the village, so that it looks as if it had always been there, and the vaulted dining room could pass for medieval. In fact it is younger than plenty of the cars parked outside. The age here is in the family, not the walls.

Breakfast shows how close the farm still is. The family raises ducks and black pigs on its land around the village, and their charcuterie turns up on the buffet beside warm pretzels. In a hotel where the rooms are named after relatives, buying the ham from strangers would have seemed rude.

Dinner is a choice between generations. In the hotel, Le K serves a long and polished tasting menu by the chef Benoit Potdevin. Across the lane, Alexandre's brother Frédéric cooks the Lorraine classics the auberge has always served, foie gras very much included, in a big and cheerful rustic dining room. The sensible plan is two nights. Either way, the wine comes up from a cellar that runs for three hundred metres under the estate, cut from golden Jaumont stone, where some of the Armagnacs are nearly as old as the auberge.

On warm days, life moves outdoors to a long pool with a bar built into the water. It faces a nature reserve, six hills that ring the village and fill with wild orchids in May and June. Few swim-up bars can claim a view that is protected by law. In the stables nearby, one of the Spanish horses answers to Tempranillo, which, in a house with a cellar like this, was probably inevitable.

Colder days belong to the spa, beneath stone vaults of its own. The rooms are nearly always full, weekends above all. Couples love it, and so do gourmets who like warmth more than ceremony; anyone after centuries of ghosts has come to the wrong hill. Twelve new suites are planned over the next few years. The family tree, presumably, will have to keep up.

Next door

In 1994 the sunny slopes of the hills around Montenach became a national nature reserve, home to some 500 plant species, among them 24 species of wild orchid.

Simone, at the top of the tower

The hotel's largest room fills the top of its tower: 80 m² with a view of 270 degrees over the hills of Montenach. A round balneo bath 1.80 metres across stands at the foot of the bed; there is a sitting area, a dressing room, a screen that lowers from the ceiling and a furnished terrace. Dinner served in the room is offered here only.

Le K under the vaults

Le K sits at the heart of the hotel, in a dining room of cut-stone vaults. Chef Benoit Potdevin has led it since it opened in 2017, with Grégoire Prigent in the dining room. Menus are served to the whole table and lean on the family farm's duck and pork, cheese from a farm three kilometres away and honey from the estate's hives.

The spa beneath the stone

The Gemology spa covers 800 m². Its sensory pool, heated to 34 °C, lies under vaults of cut stone, with a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, sensory and Finnish showers, an ice fountain and Balinese beds around it. There are five treatment rooms, one a double with private balneo. Everything except treatments is included for hotel guests, from the age of sixteen.

A bar in the pool

The outdoor infinity pool, in Bali stone and granite, opened in 2023 with a bar built into the water and a terrace of garden beds beside it. It belongs to the spa and keeps its hours, opening in early May if the weather allows and closing from October to April. In summer La Paillote serves lunch beside it, facing the hills.

Why this one

  1. A room at the top.

Simone, in the tower, with a round bath.

  2. The farm on the plate.

Duck and pork from the family's land.

  3. Stone vaults, warm water.

    A sensory pool at 34 °C.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Simone is a different stay.

Simone is the only suite in the tower and the largest room in the hotel, at 80 m² against 45 m² for the next category. It looks out over 270 degrees of the Montenach hills, has a furnished terrace and a round balneo bath 1.80 metres across at the foot of the bed. A dinner served in the room is offered in this suite only. With a single suite of its kind, a stay built around Simone means booking the dates around its availability.

  2. Choose the name for the view.

Each named suite has its own outlook, and the hotel publishes it. Junior Suites Alexandre, Georges and Philippe look onto the Auberge, the hotel entrance, the valley and the car park. Charles, Valérie and Frédéric face the family farm; Suzanne, Thomas, Joseph and the Top Suite Brigitte face the valley. Frédéric and Joseph sit under the roof with exposed beams. The Superior rooms have showers rather than baths; a tub begins with the suites.

  3. Plan the evenings by kitchen.

Le K serves dinner only, Monday to Saturday, and is closed on Sunday evening. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays Le Komptoir also serves in the evening, so Sunday dinner on site means the bistro or the Auberge across the lane. For two to four guests, Le K offers a dinner at a private counter in the kitchen, with the chef serving and explaining a set menu; it is booked in advance with the table, not on the night.

  4. Summer and winter are two hotels.

The outdoor pool, its bar in the water and La Paillote belong to the warm months: the pool opens in early May if the weather allows and closes from October to April, and La Paillote runs from June to September. In winter the vaulted spa carries the stay, with its sensory pool heated to 34 °C. Spa access and treatments start at sixteen, with an adult, so families with younger children should not plan around it.

The price question

The money buys a family's house rather than a hotel group's: rooms named after relatives, meat from the family farm, the Auberge a short walk away and a large vaulted spa included for guests. It does not buy uniformity. The Superior rooms are shower-only, some junior suites look onto the car park, and the pool and its bar are summer pleasures. Simone is the room the essay describes, and there is only one of it.

What the money buys

  • Use of the 800 m² spa, its vaulted sensory pool and, in summer, the outdoor pool, included for hotel guests.
  • Two kinds of dinner on one estate: Le K in the hotel, the Auberge de la Klauss across the lane.
  • Duck and pork from the family's own farm around the village.

What it leaves out

  • A bath in the Superior rooms, which have showers.
  • An outdoor pool between October and April.
  • A gastronomic lunch: Le K serves in the evening only.

Who it suits

Book it for two nights, one dinner at Le K and one at the Auberge, in a named suite chosen for its view, or in Simone if it is available. Families with children under sixteen, who cannot use the spa, and travellers who want the pool in October are better placed elsewhere or in another season.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Villa René Lalique

René Lalique's own house of 1920 at Wingen-sur-Moder, in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park: six suites named after Lalique designs, a restaurant and wine cellar by Mario Botta, and the Lalique museum nearby.

  • Hôtel des Berges

The Haeberlin family's hotel at Illhaeusern, on the banks of the Ill in the garden of the Auberge de l'Ill, with rooms and suites named after cigars and a spa of 800 m².
