A family's mountain,a borrowed label.
Haute-Savoie, France45°51′ N 6°39′ E
In Bordeaux, the most reassuring words on a bottle are mis en bouteille au château: bottled at the estate, by the people who made the wine. The Alps have long worked on the same principle. More than anywhere else in Europe, their grand hotels still belong to families, and the name on the door is usually the family's own. Four Seasons Megève is the great exception, and a curious one, because the family is right there. During the First World War, Noémie de Rothschild set out to give France its own answer to St. Moritz and found it on the slopes of Mont d'Arbois. A century later her descendants built this hotel on the same ground, then handed it a global name.
It is fair to wonder why. The Rothschilds invented this corner of Megève, they make wine and run houses of their own, and their fingerprints are everywhere: Ariane de Rothschild shaped the interiors with the decorator Pierre-Yves Rochon and hung the corridors with paintings and sculptures from her own collection. Yet the brand on the door changes the temperature. Corporate is not a dirty word here. It simply means polish, every edge planed smooth, every gesture rehearsed until it no longer shows.
And the polish is superb. Service runs without a visible seam, no room is smaller than thirty-five square metres, and the three chalets of stone and old timber feel generous rather than grand. The long, forgiving runs of Mont d'Arbois start outside, Mont Blanc dominates the view, the village of cobbled lanes and horse-drawn sleighs is a short shuttle away, and Geneva is just over an hour by road. Families who want certainty, with a children's kingdom and a teenagers' den complete with DJ decks, will find little to fault.
The cellar is where the family speaks most clearly. Some fourteen thousand bottles fill a circular room below ground, many from the Rothschilds' own reserves, and an hour among the racks before dinner is the house's quiet ceremony, whether the evening then leads to the pan-Asian plates of Kaito or the Brasserie Benjamin.
The spa follows the same flawless script. Its pool runs from indoors to out at a steady twenty-eight degrees beneath a mirrored ceiling, and swimming out into falling snow, with the chalet lights coming on, is the finest way to end a day on the mountain.
What polish costs is texture. Beside the family houses of the Alps, with their creaking floors and owners at the bar, Four Seasons Megève can feel a touch anonymous, impeccable in every particular and slightly short of surprise. At around 1,350 metres the snow can run thin in a poor winter, the bar is small for a house of this size, and the bill is pitched at the very top of the market.
Nearly everything about this hotel is excellent. The vintage is fine, the family behind it is one of the great names of the mountain, and the cellar is theirs. Only the label is borrowed.
On location
The Golf du Mont d'Arbois next door opened in 1923 as France's first mountain golf course; Edmond de Rothschild later had it redrawn with the golfer Henry Cotton. Guests reach it directly from the resort.
The indoor-outdoor pool
One heated pool runs from inside the spa out onto a terrace: ten metres by 6.2 indoors, fifteen by 5.9 outside, used all year, with underwater music. Inside there is a lounge with a fireplace and a refreshment bar. Around it, the 900 m² spa has six treatment rooms, including a couple's suite, a sauna, a hammam and treatments for children.
The cellar on two levels
The wine cellar is built on two levels, joined by a spiral glass staircase that winds down past the racks to a round dining table. It opens by reservation only, for tastings and small receptions, and for a private six-course dinner for two to eight guests, the menu set by the executive chef and the wine chosen from the collection.
Kaito, by the slopes
Kaito cooks Nikkei: Japanese technique with Peruvian flavours and Alpine produce, with a sushi bar and an omakase menu. It is the restaurant closest to the snow, with its own access to the slopes in winter and to the golf course in summer, and its terrace seats almost as many as the dining room.
A club for every age
The Kids Club, called the Enchanted Forest, takes children from three to twelve, with qualified facilitators and a programme that follows the season: snow forts in winter, a mini farm with ponies and chickens in summer. Meals can be booked there. Teenagers have a Teen Zone of their own, with arcade games, consoles, foosball, a jukebox and a cinema room.

Why this one
01
Skis to the lift.
A Ski Valet carries them each morning.
02
A club for every age.
Kids Club from three, a Teen Zone after.
03
A pool in two climates.
Heated, indoors and out, all year.
The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Two seasons, with gaps between.
The resort opens twice a year: in winter from mid-December to mid-April, in summer from mid-June to mid-September, and it is closed in between. For winter 2026-27 it reopens on 16 December. Megève's ski season usually runs from December to early April, depending on snow, so the hotel's first and last weeks depend on the lifts. In summer the draw shifts to the Mont d'Arbois golf course next door, hiking from the door and the mini farm for children.
02
Which room takes a family.
The Superior, Deluxe and Prestige rooms sleep two adults, or one adult with one child. A family of four needs at least a Premium Room or a Four Seasons Room, which add a sofa bed, or a one-bedroom suite. Larger groups have two whole floors: the Suite des Alpes, three bedrooms for up to seven guests, and the Suite Mont Blanc, five bedrooms and seven balconies for ten adults and two children. Both are booked by telephone only.
03
Let the ski staff do the carrying.
The resort is ski-in, ski-out on Mont d'Arbois, part of the Évasion Mont Blanc area. Skis and boards can be rented on site; the in-house Ski Concierge waxes and tunes them, and the Ski Valet carries the equipment to the lifts each morning. Private lessons are arranged with the École du Ski Français. The resort itself advises booking lessons and activities before arrival for Christmas, New Year and the school holidays, when instructors are scarcest.
04
Plan the meals around the mountain.
Kaito has its own door onto the slopes in winter and onto the golf course in summer, so it works for lunch in ski boots. Idéal 1850, on the Mont d'Arbois summit at 1,850 metres, is reached on skis or on foot and looks across to Mont Blanc. The wine cellar opens by reservation only, and its private dinner seats two to eight. In winter a fondue is served under the geodesic dome near the resort.
The price question
The money buys certainty on a mountain the Rothschilds shaped: rooms of at least 35 m², skis carried to the lift, a club for every age and a spa big enough for a full day. It does not buy a year-round address, a large bar, or the idiosyncrasy of an owner-run chalet hotel. The comparison is with Courchevel, where the same budget buys a larger ski area.
What the money buys
Ski-in, ski-out on Mont d'Arbois, with a Ski Concierge and Ski Valet.
A Kids Club for ages three to twelve and a separate Teen Zone.
A 900 m² spa with an indoor-outdoor pool used year-round.
What it leaves out
Opening outside the two seasons, mid-December to mid-April and mid-June to mid-September.
A bar of any size: the Glass Bar seats eighteen inside.
Rooms for a family of four below the Premium Room category.
Who it suits
Book it for a family ski week in which children's clubs, lessons and equipment are handled on site, or for a summer stay built on golf and walking. A couple who want a village address, or skiers set on the highest, most snow-sure terrain, are better placed elsewhere.
Who should spend elsewhere
Cheval Blanc Courchevel
The first Cheval Blanc Maison, in the Trois Vallées: 36 keys including an apartment and a chalet, interiors by Sybille de Margerie, ski-in ski-out, and restaurants including Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc.
Airelles Courchevel
A hotel in Courchevel 1850 modelled on the castles of nineteenth-century Austria-Hungary: 44 rooms and suites, a slope-side terrace, a kids' club with a teenagers' room, a private cinema and a children's pool in the spa.
