Summer,sold by the day.

French Riviera, France43°33′ N 7°08′ E

The day at the Hôtel du Cap begins with a walk. The bedrooms are mostly in the white house at the top of the park; the reason for coming is at the bottom, a few hundred metres away down a long allée through the pines: a pavilion on the rocks, a pool cut out of the stone, a row of cabanas, a diving board over open water. The house is where guests sleep; everything else is down there.

That walk is older than the Riviera summer itself. Until the First World War the coast was where northern Europe spent its winters, and in summer the grand hotels closed. The pool blasted out of the rock below this one, and a summer in the 1920s when it stayed open for an American couple and their friends, helped turn the season round, and the rest of the coast followed. A century on, the hotel that helped invent the Riviera summer opens only for it, from April to October, and still sells it in the same unit: one day at the rocks.

Everything is arranged around that day, and priced by it. The thirty-three cabanas along the rocks, first put up between the wars and refurbished in 2024, are kept for hotel guests, booked separately by the day and, in high summer, often harder to get than the rooms. Lunch by the pool comes at prices that are startling even by Riviera standards. For decades the hotel took only cash. It accepts cards now, and the bill is what guests grumble about most.

What the money buys is that day, still done the old way. There is no sand and no beach-club soundtrack: you go in from the rock, the springboard or the trapeze over the water, and it is the open Mediterranean, not a bay. Shade comes from the pines, and in the evening the pavilion's lounge takes the last of the light over the sea.

That makes the choice of room secondary, but not trivial. The house at the top has the history and some rooms that feel their age; the pavilion at the bottom has thirty-one sea-facing junior suites, redone in 2023, where the day never has to start with a walk. In festival week in May the hotel belongs to the film industry, at prices to match; June and September are calmer, with warm sea. Swimmers should book the pavilion, a cabana and a week in June, in that order. Anyone who wants a Riviera hotel mainly for its rooms is paying for a day they will not use.

The cabanas

Thirty-three. Book them with the room.

The walk down

A few hundred metres of pine shade between the bedroom and the sea, and the white house at the top of it all.

Cut from the rock

Cut into the stone in 1914, it helped turn the Riviera from a winter resort into a summer one. It is still for hotel guests only, and there is no lifeguard.

Rooms at the water

The thirty-one junior suites of the Eden-Roc Pavilion all face the sea and spare you the walk. In the main house, ask which rooms were renovated most recently.

Priced by the day

Cabana, lunch, a drink at the pool: each part of the day is priced on its own, and none of it cheaply. Louroc, in the evening, keeps its Michelin star.

Why this one

  1. The old Riviera summer.

The walk through the pines, the pool in the rock and the cabanas along the stone are the day the whole coast was later built around, still kept here in the same order.

  2. A swimmer's hotel.

No sand and no beach club: open sea from the rock, a diving board and a pool of seawater. On a coast of sunbeds, it is a rare place to swim properly.

  3. Suites at the water.

The pavilion's thirty-one sea-facing junior suites, redone in 2023, put the first swim a few steps from the bed.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Book the cabana with the room.

There are thirty-three cabanas along the rocks, kept for hotel guests and booked separately through reservations, and in high summer they can be harder to get than a room. They are priced by the day, on top of the room, so decide before you book whether you will use one every day or for one special one.

  2. Sleep at the bottom, or accept the walk.

The Eden-Roc Pavilion's thirty-one junior suites all face the sea and were refreshed in 2023; they are the rooms closest to the water. The main house has the history, views over the park and some rooms that feel their age. If you book there, ask which rooms were renovated most recently.

  3. Choose your fortnight.

Mid-May belongs to the Cannes Film Festival and its parties, with the year's highest prices and a crowd that comes to be seen. The sea can still be cool in early May. June and September give warm water, a calmer house and rates below festival levels; the hotel closes in mid-October.

  4. Know the rules at the water.

Children may use the pool from eight in the morning to seven in the evening, with an adult, no more than two children per adult, and there is no lifeguard. A kids' club runs in high season; babysitting is arranged through the concierge, and the spa is for sixteen and over, with a few treatments for younger guests. Evenings expect smart dress; Giovanni's is the Italian alternative to Louroc.

The price question

The Hôtel du Cap is expensive at every turn, from the room to the cabana to a sandwich by the pool, and value is its weak point. What the money buys is the Riviera summer day, on rock and open sea, at one of the places that first made it. That is worth it for swimmers and for an occasion; it makes little sense for anyone who wants a modern hotel, a sandy beach or a quiet room in festival week.

What the summer buys

  • A pool cut into the rock, and open-sea swimming from the stone.
  • A pine park and a century-old walk down to the sea.
  • Sea-facing suites right above the rocks, redone in 2023.
  • Service in the old Riviera manner.

What it leaves out

  • A sandy beach.
  • Moderation on the bill: cabanas, lunch and drinks are priced high.
  • Uniform rooms: some in the main house feel their age.
  • Calm in festival week.

Who it suits

Swimmers, couples marking an occasion, families with older children, and anyone who wants the Riviera summer at one of its sources.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Hôtel Belles Rives

On the bay at Juan-les-Pins, a few minutes away: forty-three rooms in the villa where Fitzgerald lived in the mid-1920s, in the same family since 1929, with its own beach club and a Michelin-starred restaurant. The same era at a smaller scale, and a sandy bay.

  • Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel

On the next cape to the east, with a glass funicular down through the park to a heated seawater pool by the sea: a similar day over a longer season, March to mid-November: the choice for spring or late autumn.
