Art Deco,at scale.
In 1925, Paris was invited to inspect the home of a very rich man who did not exist. For the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann furnished an entire mansion for an imaginary collector. Pierre Patout designed the building; artists supplied paintings and sculpture; visitors could see what impeccable taste looked like when money was no obstacle. When the exhibition ended, the house disappeared. Its owner had never needed a forwarding address.
Almost eighty years later, someone gave him a hotel. The Hilton Arc de Triomphe opened on rue de Courcelles in 2004, an enormous new building dressed in the glamour of the great French ocean liners. It became Hôtel du Collectionneur in 2012, borrowing the name of Ruhlmann's famous pavilion. The joke has survived better than you might expect: the original collector's home was a beautifully staged fantasy, and here is another one, ready to rent by the night.
Only this collector has a great many houseguests. There are 497 rooms and suites, and the marble-and-brass lobby has the scale to match. The curves, symmetry and gleaming surfaces make a persuasive case for a voyage in first class. So does the steady traffic through the public rooms. This is a large hotel with meetings and celebrations as well as holidaymakers; at busy times you may feel less like the owner of an Art Deco mansion than one passenger among several hundred. For some travellers that bustle is part of a grand hotel's appeal. Others will miss a front door that feels like their own.
Upstairs, however, the practicalities are better than the theatrical introduction suggests. Many rooms measure a comfortable thirty square metres, with pale marble bathrooms and headboards decorated with alabaster. The useful decision is often not how big a room to book but which way it faces. A Deluxe Garden looks onto the hotel's greenery. A Prestige Balcony gives you somewhere to sit above Paris, while a Prestige Eiffel buys the famous landmark without necessarily buying extra floor space. The hotel lists only seven rooms in that last category. Ask for the outlook you actually want, not simply the grandest adjective.
The patio is a particularly good reason to stay downstairs. Behind the restaurant, sixty seats are tucked between green walls, a welcome alternative to the formality of the lobby. Lunch here feels like an escape from the hotel's size. The bar is more sociable, with a long granite counter and enough people passing through to make a drink interesting. Just check the dining arrangements: the hotel's current information promotes restaurant lunch and Sunday brunch, rather than promising a full dinner service every night. Room service, at least, runs around the clock.
There is a newly refreshed Art Deco spa, with a proper indoor swimming pool, sauna and hammam. It is a substantial pleasure in a city where a hotel pool is often little more than an elaborate bathtub. But note the booking conditions: complimentary spa access is advertised for stays reserved directly with the hotel. A guest booking elsewhere should check what is included before making swimming plans.
Beyond the doors, Parc Monceau is practically across the road, and the Musée Nissim de Camondo offers another extraordinary collector's house within walking distance—this time one that really was lived in. The Champs-Élysées and Arc de Triomphe are close too, though this is a quieter corner of the eighth arrondissement than the great shopping avenues.
Ruhlmann built a house to be admired. The more interesting question here is whether you enjoy living in it alongside everyone else. In a comfortable room above the garden, that can be a very pleasant answer.
Book direct
Spa access included; otherwise charged by the hour.
Rooms named after liners
The event spaces carry ocean-going names: Normandie, Queen Mary, Liberty, Baltic. The Normandie and its foyer are each listed at 648 m² and take up to 650 guests, which explains the scale of the ground floor and the coming and going through the lobby.
A garden behind the restaurant
The hotel lists 800 m² of open-air garden, and the Monceau Suite's 60 m² terrace looks over it. In summer, part of the outdoor space becomes Le Jardin Tropézien, a pop-up terrace made with the Provence wine estate Château Minuty.
Thirty square metres, every category
Every room category, from Deluxe King to Eiffel Prestige, is listed at the same 30 m². What changes is the outlook and the beds: two Double Double categories sleep four in a pair of 140 cm doubles, and bathrooms in white Carrara marble have a bath, a shower or both.
Below the lobby, a heated pool
The spa covers nearly 450 m², with four treatment rooms including one for two, Cellcosmet treatments and a Technogym gym open around the clock. The pool is 1.30 m deep and kept at 29°C, warm enough for a slow swim rather than training.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Book on the hotel's own website.
Spa access is included only for stays reserved directly on the official website; the hotel's FAQ gives €30 per person per hour otherwise. The pool, sauna and steam room are for hotel guests, daily from 7:30 to 20:00. Children aged four and over may swim only with an adult and only from 10:00 to 11:00 or 15:00 to 16:00. Treatments run from 9:00 to 20:00 and are booked by phone or email.
02
Rooms for four, and connecting rooms.
Families need not jump to a suite. The Deluxe and Prestige Double Double rooms, both 30 m², sleep four in two 140 cm double beds and have a bathtub; connecting rooms can be requested. Accessible rooms are listed in the Deluxe King and Prestige King categories. For more space, the Classic Suite is about 45 m² and the Deluxe Suite about 55 m²; the direct suite offer takes 20% off for two nights or more on the flexible rate.
03
Plan meals around the published hours.
Breakfast costs €45 and is served from 6:30 to 10:00 on weekdays, until 10:30 at weekends. Lunch runs daily from 12:00 to 14:30; Sunday brunch from 12:00 to 15:00 costs €96 for adults and €65 for children. The bar is open from 10:00 to 1:00. No dinner hours are published, so confirm an evening table when booking. Overnight, room service switches to a night menu from 23:00 to 7:00.
04
Timings, the car and the dog.
Check-in is from 16:00 and check-out by 12:00; earlier or later is charged and subject to availability. Valet parking has 60 spaces for vehicles up to 1.90 m high, at €60 a night; the hotel points to a covered public car park nearby at about €30. Dogs and cats up to 12 kg are accepted, two per room, at €30 each a night. The flexible rate can be cancelled free until 18:00 the day before.
The price question
Hôtel du Collectionneur sells five-star rooms in a house built for conferences as much as for leisure, and the 30 m² room is the same size whichever category name it carries. What the money buys is generous standard space, a real indoor pool and a garden in the 8th. Booked directly, with the spa included, it makes sense. Booked through a third party, or for a quiet, intimate house, the case is much weaker.
What the money buys
30 m² as the standard room size.
An indoor pool, sauna and steam room, included on direct bookings.
An 800 m² garden and Parc Monceau on foot.
What it leaves out
Calm public rooms when events are on.
Published dinner hours.
Free spa access when booked elsewhere.
Who it suits
Book it directly, for families or a pool-centred stay near the Arc de Triomphe. Look elsewhere for a small house where the staff know every guest.
Who should spend elsewhere
Le Royal Monceau Raffles
On avenue Hoche: a 23-metre pool in a 1,500 m² Starck-designed spa, and a 99-seat private cinema.
Hôtel Barrière Le Fouquet's
On avenue George V: 101 rooms and suites by Jacques Garcia, with a 15-metre heated pool.

The Edit score is the editor's grade for the level of the hotel, out of ten. It weighs what the outside judges say (Michelin Keys, Forbes Travel Guide, World's 50 Best Hotels, Atout France palace status, La Liste), what changed in the last two years and what guests write now; where these and the editor's own judgement disagree, the editor decides. A spa with a pool worth booking for adds up to two tenths.
