Dinner first,then the beach.

Towards the end of dinner at La Verrière, the chef comes out into the dining room. Romain Masset goes from table to table and then does something few cooks of his rank bother to do: he invites the guests through the kitchen door to see where it all happened, and often down to the cellar as well. It is the moment people remember, and the best reason to come. Marinca is a seaside hotel of some fifty rooms on the gulf of Valinco, in south-west Corsica, a coast that has never had the fame, or the traffic, of Porto-Vecchio.
Masset fell for cooking as a boy, watching his grandfather make the family meals, and his route to Corsica ran through some serious kitchens, among them the Marcons' in the hills of the Haute-Loire, where he picked up a lifelong weakness for mushrooms. On the island he first made his name at a manor near Calvi, then moved here, and La Verrière was soon talked about in the same breath, which suggests the habit travels with him.
The cooking is precise but never stiff. A spring menu might bring morels with sweet peas, or langoustine with celeriac and lovage, served on a terrace that looks across the water to Propriano. Then comes the tour of the kitchen, and then the great luxury of a serious dinner in Corsica, which is not having to drive home along a mountain road.
The rooms are a short walk away, pale wood and white marble, nearly all with a terrace or balcony over the water. Below them a garden steps down to a private beach, where the staff set out sunbeds on the sand and La Paillote, the barefoot restaurant on the shore, grills whole fish for lunch. There are pools too, for anyone who prefers fresh water, but the day after a dinner like that, the beach is about as far as anyone needs to go.
For the more energetic, a water taxi crosses the gulf to the little port of Propriano, and boats leave the hotel pontoon for coves along the coast that can be reached only from the sea. Both outings have the merit of ending in good time for dinner.
Marinca is for people who plan their holidays around dinner, and for couples who want a calm, grown-up stay and a good spa rather than a scene. Families are welcome, in suites that sleep four, though the mood stays quiet. Ajaccio and Figari airports are each about an hour's drive away. The season runs from May to early October.
In most grand restaurants, only the waiters ever pass through the kitchen door. At La Verrière the guests do too, and after an evening on the other side of it, the walk back to bed is the shortest journey in Corsica.
The name on the bar
Le William, the panoramic bar above the gulf, is named after William Laurent, who took the hotel over in 2000 with his daughter Géraldine; she now runs it with her own daughter, Illona.
The terrace at La Verrière
La Verrière's terrace looks straight over the gulf of Valinco, partly under a glass roof, with Propriano and the hills across the water. Romain Masset's cooking leans on Corsican produce and the maquis. The terrace serves the hotel breakfast in the morning, and at dinner it is entirely non-smoking, which matters for a menu built on delicate aromas.
A Luxury Terrace room
The Luxury Terrace rooms sit on the top floor, 24 m², with a king-size bed or twins and a terrace of their own rather than a balcony. Like every room, they face the sea, and the finishes are the hotel's usual pale wood and marble. They take two adults and a baby, so families with older children look to the suites.
The private beach
A staircase cut into the rock leads down from the gardens to a stretch of fine sand on the gulf. The hotel has a permit for 30 sunbeds here and serves food and drinks on the sand, so booking a bed is advised in summer. Staff will also find a spot for a towel, and La Paillote is a few steps along the sand.
Lunch at La Paillote
La Paillote stands just below the estate with direct access to the beach, and serves lunch and dinner every day with feet in the sand. The cooking moves between Corsica and Italy; in the afternoon a cabinet of pastries takes over. In the evening it can be set for a candlelit dinner for two, with a butler.

Why this one
01
Dinner without the drive.
La Verrière is a walk from the rooms.
02
A beach of its own.
Down a stair cut into the rock.
03
Water both ways.
Three pools outside, one in the spa.
The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Count the steps.
The hotel says it plainly: the property is built on a cliffside, with numerous steps between its outdoor areas, and the beach is reached by a staircase cut into the rock. Rooms, gardens, pools and the shore sit at different levels. For most guests that is part of the view; for anyone who walks with difficulty, or travels with a pushchair, it is worth asking at booking which rooms keep the climbs shortest, and how the beach is reached.
02
The terrace is a category, not a given.
Every room faces the sea, but the outside space differs. Chic, Superior Chic, Luxury and Junior Suite rooms have a balcony; the Luxury Terrace rooms, on the top floor, have a real terrace; the Romantic Balneo suite lists no balcony at all. The two Panoramic Jacuzzi suites add a 50 m² terrace with a private jacuzzi, and the Penthouse a 100 m² one. For dinner outdoors on your own terrace, book the category, not the hope.
03
Families: three ways to fit four.
The Family suites sleep two adults and two children in 50 m², with a separate living room and two bathrooms, which keeps evenings calm. The Duplex Pool suite is set apart over two floors with its own pool, laid out like a small family house. The Junior Suite also takes two children, on a sofa bed. For a larger group, the Mas de Pierre villa sleeps six, though breakfast is served at the hotel and room service does not reach it.
04
Sunbeds are few, and the season is short.
The beach is private, but the hotel holds a prefectural permit for just 30 sunbeds on the sand and asks guests to book them; there are also some restrictions on beach use, and staff help guests find a spot, with a towel if the beds are taken. The hotel opens only from early May: the 2026 season closes on 4 October, and the next reopens in early May 2027. Midsummer is when both matter most.
The price question
A stay here buys a serious dinner, a beach and a spa within a short walk of the bed, on a quieter gulf than Porto-Vecchio's. It does not buy a flat site, a published room count, or a season beyond early October, and on the beach the sunbeds have to be booked like a table.
What the money buys
La Verrière's terrace over the gulf, a walk from the rooms.
A private beach with La Paillote serving lunch and dinner on the sand.
Three outdoor pools and a 600 m² spa with an indoor pool for cooler days.
What it leaves out
Step-free circulation: the hotel stands on a cliffside.
A sunbed for everyone without booking: there are 30.
Any opening between early October and early May.
Who it suits
Couples who want to plan a few days around dinner at La Verrière, with the beach and the spa in between, and families who book a Family or Duplex Pool suite and like a quiet house. Anyone who needs level paths, or wants a lively beach scene, is better placed elsewhere.
Who should spend elsewhere
Domaine de Murtoli
A farming estate of some 2,500 hectares in the Ortolo valley near Sartène, with about twenty houses let one by one, a nine-room hotel at the farm, three restaurants and a beach kept for guests.
Casadelmar
A hotel on the gulf of Porto-Vecchio with two restaurants: the gastronomic Casadelmar, with Italian chef Fabio Bragagnolo, and Il Pontile on a terrace set on the water.
