A grand hotelfor a spring.

Haute-Savoie, France46°24′ N 6°36′ E

Spelled backwards, Évian reads naive, which is the last thing anyone could call the Hôtel Royal. Consider the facts. It is a grand hotel built by a water company to sell water, named after a king who never turned up, and owned today by a firm better known for yoghurt. On paper it should not work. On the hillside above Lake Geneva, it works beautifully.

The water came first. In 1789 a marquis with kidney trouble drank from a spring in the town and declared himself cured, and the rich of Europe have been arriving to sip ever since. By the end of the Belle Époque they needed somewhere suitably grand to do it, so the company that bottled the spring built one. Edward VII promised to visit, then died before he could. Monarchs, it seems, are unreliable. Water is not: every drop spends some fifteen years filtering through glacial sand before it surfaces, and it has never once missed an appointment.

The house is a glorious piece of showmanship. Gustave Jaulmes painted its ceilings with frescoes, the park rolls down towards the lake, and the Swiss shore glitters across the water, looking expensive. When the hotel was restored, the designer François Champsaur hung a chandelier of glass raindrops over the bar, which must be the only rain the owners have ever willingly allowed indoors.

It is a resort in the grand old sense, built for whole summers rather than long weekends, and families treat it accordingly. Grandparents who first came as children now arrive with their own grandchildren, who vanish into the kids' club while older siblings head off with the teens' club to bowling and laser games, a sentence that would have baffled Edward VII. The best ritual, though, is free. Down in the town, at the Cachat spring, the water runs from a tap in the wall, and hotel guests queue beside pensioners with trolleys of empty bottles: same spring, same water, same price, which is nothing.

Back on the hill, the spa sends guests through the water's whole biography, from snow room to outdoor baths to cold plunge. After a century of selling it by the bottle, the company has found a way to sell it by the hour, and nobody seems to mind. Dinner at Les Fresques, under Jaulmes's painted ceilings with the lake in the windows, makes a strong case for stronger drinks.

Some of that showmanship grates. In high season the corridors fill and the place feels more like a family holiday than a hideaway, conferences pass through, and the brand is never far away; even the mist in the spa feels on message. Évian itself is a quiet lakeside town, lovely for an evening stroll but rarely the reason for the journey.

Which brings the story back to the name. A hotel that has spent more than a century persuading discerning travellers to come and admire a glass of water is many things. Naive is not on the list.

On the record

In June 2026 the hotel hosted the G7 summit, more than twenty years after it received the G8 in 2003.

Les Fresques

The dinner restaurant takes its name from the ceilings Gustave Jaulmes painted with scenes of summer evening, and the windows face Lake Geneva. Chef Yohan Fatela cooks with lake fish, Savoie beef, Bresse poultry and eggs from the farm next door, and with vegetables from the hotel's 3,000 m² kitchen garden, planted in 2003. Dinner only, five evenings a week.

Le Bar

The round bar sits under the I.Rain suspension, a cloud of glass drops designed by interior architect François Champsaur, with tall arched windows on both sides and a terrace over the lake in summer. Davide Trupia's list includes a Negroni aged for two months in oak and a house gin distilled in Chamonix with rhubarb, juniper and lemon zest.

The evian®SPA

The 1,700 m² spa is arranged around the route evian water takes through the Alps. Beside the sauna and steam room are a snow cave, where snow is made, a cold plunge tub and an 80 m² outdoor hydrocontact circuit kept at 33°C. The indoor and outdoor pools are reserved for hotel guests; children have a set slot in the water areas each afternoon.

A Séjour lake view room

The Séjour lake view room is the smallest way to face the water: 27 m² with a furnished balcony over Lake Geneva. Rooms were refurbished in 2015 in blond oak, white and blue under the Belle Époque shell. Families who need more space look at the 47 m² Résidence lake view room, which takes two adults and one child.

Why this one

  1. Frescoes over dinner.

Les Fresques sits under Jaulmes's ceilings.

  2. A snow cave in the spa.

Then a cold plunge and a 33°C pool outdoors.

  3. Clubs at no charge.

Included for children aged 3 to 17.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Lake view or park view.

Every category is defined by what the window faces. The Séjour and Résidence rooms come in park-view and lake-view versions; park-view rooms face south over the grounds, while the lake-view ones look north across the water to the Swiss shore. Fifth-floor rooms in several categories have no balcony, so a room on that floor gives up the outdoor seat. For the full lake panorama, the sixth-floor suites add private terraces of 10 to 60 m².

  2. Plan the evening at Les Fresques.

Les Fresques serves dinner only, from Tuesday to Saturday, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. A two-night stay from Sunday therefore may not include it at all. La Véranda, one corridor away, serves through the week and holds a brunch on Sundays, and room service is available. Pets may stay in the hotel but are not admitted to Les Fresques. A guest who comes for the painted ceilings should fix that table first, then book the nights around it.

  3. What the children's clubs cover.

The Kid's Club from age three and the Teen's Club from ten to seventeen are included for hotel guests; the Baby Club, from four to 36 months, is booked by package. Meals are taken at the neighbouring Hôtel Ermitage. Bowling and laser games are teen outings during French school holidays, not facilities on site, and some carry a charge. From 16 November to 8 December the clubs close on Mondays and Tuesdays.

  4. Summer adds a second hotel.

Much of the outdoor life is seasonal. The outdoor infinity pool and its Pool Bar open at weekends and on public holidays from May, and every day in July and August, in good weather only. L'Oliveraie, the buffet restaurant beside it, opens in July and August only. The indoor pool, the spa's outdoor hydrocontact circuit and the snow cave run all year, so a winter stay leans on the spa rather than the park and the pool terrace.

The price question

The money buys a room in a Belle Époque hotel with the lake in front, a spa built around the evian story, and clubs that take children off their parents' hands at no extra cost. It does not buy seclusion: the hotel is part of a resort with three hotels, a golf club, a casino and a conference centre, and the brand runs through everything from the spa menu to the water on the meeting tables.

What the money buys

  • Kid's Club and Teen's Club places included for children staying at the hotel.
  • Daily use of the spa's pools, snow cave and outdoor hydrocontact circuit.
  • Signing privileges at the Évian Resort's 13 bars and restaurants.

What it leaves out

  • A lake view in the entry room unless the lake-view version is booked.
  • Les Fresques on Sunday or Monday evenings.
  • A quiet house in school holidays, or a hotel set apart from groups and conferences.

Who it suits

Book it for a family summer week or a spa stay with the lake in view, with a lake-view room and the Les Fresques evening chosen first. Couples who want privacy and a small house will find the scale and the events calendar against them.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Four Seasons Resort Megève

A ski-in, ski-out resort at about 1,300 metres on Mont d'Arbois: 55 rooms and suites, a two-level wine cellar, a 900 m² spa with an indoor-outdoor pool, and a kids' club and teen zone.

  • Les Fermes de Marie

Nine connected chalets of rebuilt farm timber in a two-hectare park near the centre of Megève: about 70 rooms and suites, a 1,000 m² Pure Altitude spa with 13 treatment rooms, and a shuttle to the Chamois gondola.
