The plateau above Le Castellet was made for speed. The Paul Ricard circuit cuts across it, and private aircraft land at an airfield nearby. The adjoining hotel belongs to the same landscape of arrivals and departures, but its present purpose is almost the reverse. Behind the gate, Hôtel & Spa du Castellet invites people who have been moving all week to stay exactly where they are.
Ochre buildings with a Tuscan air sit among umbrella pines in twelve hectares of parkland. The forty-odd bedrooms and suites have terraces facing trees, gardens or the little golf course; the Mediterranean is a distant line rather than a beach at the door. Interiors are soft and conventional, more comfortable than daring. There is no dramatic lobby to hold an audience. Outside, the neighbouring circuit is a reminder that the peace is geographical, not absolute: on event days, engines may travel further than the eye.
The spa makes the argument for stopping. Seven hundred square metres hold an indoor pool, hydrotherapy basins, a hammam, sauna, salt cave and a Kneipp channel for walking between hot and cold water. Beyond it, a heated outdoor pool faces the pines. A six-hole golf course and walking paths offer other ways of using the grounds. These are proper facilities, not a treatment room added to justify the word spa on a sign.
Then there is Fabien Ferré. After years in the kitchen alongside Christophe Bacquié, he took charge of La Table du Castellet and won three Michelin stars in 2024. His cooking turns towards the Mediterranean and its gardens, pursuing fish and vegetables with the intensity that the racing circuit reserves for fractions of a second. A dinner here is not an incidental hotel meal. It is a reason to plan a journey, with the pleasure of knowing your bedroom is only a short walk away.
Not every meal need carry that weight. San Felice serves a more informal menu, with cooking over wood fire and a terrace overlooking the landscape. A day might begin in the spa, include a drive to a Bandol vineyard or the hilltop village, and end back among the pines. The hotel is well placed for both the coast and the Var's interior, provided you have a car. Without one, the gate can feel like the edge of your world.
The contrasts are real. The décor will seem reassuring to some and anonymous to others; the resort is neither a beach hotel nor a country house with a village on its doorstep. Dinner at La Table needs its own reservation, and the circuit calendar matters more than the photographs of empty lawns suggest. This is a serious gastronomic and wellness address with serious prices. The smaller inconveniences are easier to forgive if the food or the spa is why you came.
A pit stop on the racetrack is measured in seconds, and everyone is anxious to be moving again. Here, the useful test is whether you feel any urgency to leave the table, the pool or the pine trees. For a hotel built within earshot of a circuit, it is an unusually good place to forget the clock.
One kilometre
From the hotel to Castellet airport, where private jet flights can be arranged through the concierge.
The runway beyond the park
From the air the plan of the hotel is clear: the main building at the head of a long water channel, the outdoor pool beside it, lawns and pines falling away below. Behind it lies the runway of Castellet airport, a kilometre from the hotel. A free electric shuttle connects the hotel with both the airport and the circuit.
A Junior Suite terrace
The Junior Suite, 40 m², is the category at which the private terrace that comes with every room turns into outdoor living space: it is the only one the hotel describes as spacious, and the first with a separate lounge. Below it sit the Classic rooms, 27 m², in the country house or the villas, and the Prestige rooms, 32 m², in the main Bastide.
The indoor pool
The spa's pool is heated and fitted with massage jets, in a glazed hall with the garden on the other side of the windows. Its outdoor counterpart works by a different rule: the infinity pool in the park is reserved for hotel residents, so a lunch at Le San Felice does not come with a swim.
Bare tables at La Table
La Table du Castellet is more contemporary than the hotel around it: soft tones, wood and slate, tables left without cloths, a canvas by Martin Berger, The Abysses of the Mediterranean, in the main room. A second, smaller room looks over the park and its gazebos. There is no cheese trolley; diners visit the cellar and choose from about fifty cheeses.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
The restaurant closes before the hotel.
Hotel, spa and Le San Felice keep one season; La Table du Castellet keeps a shorter one. In 2026 the gastronomic restaurant begins its winter closure about two weeks before the rest of the house, and even in season it serves neither lunch nor dinner every day, with some days dark altogether. A late-autumn stay booked for Fabien Ferré's cooking should therefore start with the restaurant's published calendar, not the hotel's, or the evening that justified the journey may fall on a dark dining room.
02
Lunch is the shorter way in.
La Table du Castellet divides its cooking into two menus, Vegetal Expression and Marine Expression, each served as a six-course journey, with an eight-course Symbiosis menu that draws on both. Only at lunch does each also come in a four-course version. For a first visit, or for anyone who finds a long tasting dinner more endurance than pleasure, lunch offers the same kitchen at a gentler length, and leaves the evening free for the grill at Le San Felice.
03
A course for learning, not a golf week.
The six holes in the park, two par 4s of 230 to 245 metres and four par 3s of 80 to 150 metres, are approved by the French Golf Federation, and the academy is led by Patrick Giraud, at Le Castellet since 2007. Its programmes run from beginner to competitor, and the intermediate one includes validation of the Green Card that French clubs ask for. A first-timer can leave with a card in hand; a seasoned player will soon want an eighteen-hole course elsewhere.
04
Families and the top suite are different stays.
The two largest categories answer different questions. The Deluxe Suite, 60 to 70 m², sleeps four, the only category listed for more than two adults. The Exception Suite, at 150 m², has private access, its own fitness area, a hammam and a bathroom equipped for balneotherapy, yet it is listed for two adults and a baby's cot. It repeats the spa in private rather than adding beds, which makes it a choice for a couple, not a family.
The price question
The money buys a quiet, guarded park beside a racetrack, a terrace with every room, a spa large enough to fill a day and a gastronomic kitchen that is the real reason to come. It does not buy a village on foot, a beach, or silence on circuit event days, and the gastronomic restaurant keeps a shorter season than the hotel. Its true rival is not a seaside hotel but a Bandol-country address with a village at the door.
What the money buys
Fabien Ferré's La Table du Castellet a short walk from the room, with Le San Felice for a simpler night.
A 700 m² spa with a heated indoor pool, salt grotto, hammam, sauna and Kneipp path.
An outdoor infinity pool reserved for hotel residents, in a 12-hectare park of pines.
What it leaves out
Cafés, shops or a village within walking distance.
The sea, which is a glimpse on clear days rather than a destination on foot.
Quiet on the days the neighbouring circuit is racing.
Who it suits
Book it for two or three nights organised around one dinner, the spa and the park, with a car, on dates checked against both the restaurant's calendar and the circuit's. Village life, the beach and a long golf holiday lie elsewhere.
Who should spend elsewhere
Maison Bérard
In the perched village of La Cadière-d'Azur among the Bandol vineyards, with a restaurant and a spa and the village outside the door.
Hôtel Île Rousse Thalazur
On the water at Rènecros Bay in Bandol, with a seawater pool and a private beach.
