The sheep moved out,the olive trees stayed.

Haute-Corse, France42°39′ N 9°20′ E

The first residents to leave La Dimora were the sheep. Long before it was a hotel, this eighteenth-century farmhouse in the green Nebbio hills near Saint-Florent worked for its living, turning out olive oil and milk, and the flock slept in stone folds of its own. Today the folds hold a restaurant and the farmhouse holds seventeen rooms, while the only flock on the property arrives by hire car from Bastia airport. It is a small country hotel, six kilometres inland from the port and the beaches, and it is very good at the one thing the farm never offered anybody, which is rest.

The farmer's family would recognise the walls and very little else. The rooms, arranged around a courtyard, keep their old beams and bare stone, and some have headboards built from logs of bamboo, a crop the farm certainly never grew. Each guest finds two little sweets waiting on arrival.

The olive trees stayed. They stand about the gardens among the lavender, old enough to have watched generations of hard labour, and these days they look on at a heated pool, fifteen metres long, where guests stretch out on outdoor sofas behind white muslin and do nothing whatsoever. The trees appear to have made their peace with it.

When the sofa finally loses its grip, Saint-Florent is ten minutes away, a small port with a citadel and a great many boats. Some of those boats run along the coast to the beaches of the Désert des Agriates, which is not a desert at all but a wild stretch of maquis with no road worth the name, where the sea is the colour of a swimming pool.

Evenings begin at the bar with a glass of Muscat, the sweet wine of the vineyards around Patrimonio, a short drive away, while the hills behind the house slowly go dark. Dinner follows in the old sheepfolds, now the restaurant Pera Bianca, within thick stone walls that once kept the flock in for the night. The menu is chalked up each day according to what the market and the kitchen garden have produced.

La Dimora is quiet and rural, the kind of place for a slow, green week rather than a beach scene, whether as a couple or as a family. Children get board games to borrow and a shallow end in the pool, and two villas with pools of their own give bigger groups room to spread out. A car is essential, for the beaches as much as for Bastia airport, about half an hour away. There is no lift, so the upper rooms come with stairs.

Counting sheep is no longer part of the routine at La Dimora. The last of them moved out long ago, and nobody has had any trouble sleeping since.

Before the guests

In the eighteenth century the estate lived off its own olive oil, fruit, grain and dairy products. Its stone sheepfolds now hold the restaurant and the lounges.

A Luxury room

The Luxury rooms are on the first floor and measure 28 to 33 m², some with a large terrace shaded by trees, others with a double aspect or a view over the olive-tree patio. In this one, beams cross the ceiling and lengths of bamboo stand in a lit niche behind the bed. A third bed can be added to some, on request.

The pool and its cabins

The pool is heated and measures fifteen metres by six, on a wooden deck with loungers and parasols. Along one side stand tall cabins hung with sheer white curtains, each with a cushioned daybed, to be used alone, as a couple or with children. A small waterfall feeds the water, and palms and a centuries-old olive tree mark the entrance.

Pera Bianca in the sheepfolds

Pera Bianca occupies the old stone sheepfolds, open on the pool side under a wooden roof, with a second, vaulted dining room indoors for a more enclosed evening. The cooking is Mediterranean and built on market produce, and the restaurant belongs to the Collège Culinaire de France. The bar shares the space, with wines from nearby Patrimonio.

Villa Alba and Villa Bianca

The two villas were built in 2009, about fifty metres from the hotel, in dry stone, lime and wood. Each covers 120 m²: two bedrooms of 28 m², each with its own terrace, a fitted kitchen opening onto a lounge, and a heated private pool on a lawn with palms and olive trees. Hotel services remain available to villa guests.

Why this one

  1. Dinner in the sheepfolds.

    Pera Bianca, beside the pool.

  2. A pool with cabins.

    Fifteen metres, heated, curtained daybeds.

  3. Room to spread out.

    Two villas with private pools.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Ground floor or upstairs.

The categories differ by floor as much as by size. The Charming room is on the ground floor, looks onto the olive-tree patio, has a walk-in shower and works for guests with reduced mobility. The first Junior Suite is also at ground level, with a wooden terrace over the garden and pool. The Luxury rooms and the second Junior Suite are on the first floor, as are some Privilege rooms, so anyone who would rather avoid stairs should say so when booking.

  2. Where a family fits.

A couple with one child can take a Triple Privilege room of over 33 m², or a Luxury room where an extra bed is possible on request. Both Junior Suites and both Suites have a sofa that opens into a queen-size bed, and the first-floor Junior Suite has two bathrooms. Cots are available and childcare can be arranged. For two families or a group of friends, the villas give two bedrooms, a kitchen and a pool of their own.

  3. The villas follow their own calendar.

Villa Alba and Villa Bianca stand about fifty metres from the hotel and are let differently from the rooms. In peak season, from early July to early September in 2026, they go by the week only; the rest of the season the minimum is three nights. Each has two bedrooms of 28 m² with separate terraces, a fitted kitchen and a heated pool, and guests keep access to the hotel's restaurant, bar and services.

  4. A summer house, and dinner on site.

La Dimora publishes its season from late April to mid-October; outside those dates the hotel lists no stays. Pera Bianca serves lunch and dinner every day in high season and six days a week at either end of it, so a short stay in May or October is worth checking against the restaurant's day off. The hotel sits inland among hills, and Saint-Florent, the Agriates beaches and the Patrimonio vineyards are all reached by road.

The price question

The money buys a small, quiet country house with its own restaurant, a heated pool with shaded cabins and gardens of old olive trees, a few minutes inland from Saint-Florent. It does not buy the sea outside the window or a large spa: the beaches are a drive or a boat trip away, and the water room is a single hammam with one treatment room.

What the money buys

  • Dinner without a drive, at Pera Bianca in the old sheepfolds.
  • Hammam and jacuzzi included for hotel guests.
  • A heated pool with curtained cabins and daybeds among olive trees.

What it leaves out

  • A beach or a sea view: the hotel stands inland, among hills.
  • A full spa: one hammam, one jacuzzi and a treatment room.
  • Stays outside the published season, late April to mid-October.

Who it suits

Book it for a slow week in the Nebbio, as a couple or a family, with a car for the beaches of the Agriates and the vineyards of Patrimonio. A stay built around a beach bar or a resort spa is better placed on the coast.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • La Villa Calvi

A family hotel on the heights of Calvi, opened by Marion and Jean-Pierre Pinelli in 1992: 48 rooms, suites and apartments on a 3.5-hectare slope facing the bay and the citadel, five pools and a 500 m² spa.

  • Le Mouflon d'Or

A house built by the PLM railway company early in the twentieth century, in a park of cedars and chestnut trees at Zonza in the Alta Rocca: 25 rooms and suites, the restaurant A Nepita and a heated outdoor pool.
