Pools, paintingsand the citadel.
Haute-Corse, France42°33′ N 8°45′ E
As a young man fresh out of school, Jean-Pierre Pinelli left the Balagne, the green north-western corner of Corsica, to join his family in Africa, where he found work as a driver in the bush. Africa did not hold him. Homesickness brought him back, and after opening a couple of smaller hotels he built the one he really wanted, on the hillside above Calvi. More than thirty years later, La Villa is still the family's hotel, some fifty rooms and suites on a slope of olive trees looking down on the bay and the citadel. It is a place of pools and views rather than sand, and it has an unusual number of guests who share its founder's trouble with staying away.
Most of them are French, and the welcome is personal rather than grand, so a stay can seem like a visit to friends who happen to have an exceptional view. That is also how the art arrived. A Czech couple, regulars who had become friends, asked whether they might hang a few canvases, and the idea stuck. Today the gallery fills seven hundred square metres, and the way to dinner runs straight through it, so guests reach their table having already formed an opinion.
The rooms are light and uncluttered, many with balconies over the bay, but the days revolve around the main pool, twenty-five metres of water lined in black stone with the sea spread out beyond it. In a smaller pool facing the citadel bob giant ducks by Julien Marinetti, an artist the Pinellis' son represents, which makes them, quite possibly, the best-connected pool toys in Corsica.
The beach is a little further off, a stretch of sand fringed with pines a few minutes down the hill by shuttle. The hotel can also arrange a boat out to the Scandola nature reserve and on to Girolata, a fishing village that can be reached only by sea or on foot. It is the kind of day that makes a young man's homesickness easy to understand.
After dark, La Table by La Villa serves dinner on a terrace facing the citadel, where Fabio Volontè, a chef from Como, cooks the local fish with a light Mediterranean hand. He, too, is a long way from home, although so far he shows no sign of wanting to go back.
La Villa is at its best with people who like company with their sunshine. Families are well looked after, ducks and childcare included, and couples get a handsome hillside base with a serious kitchen. Nobody would call the place hushed, though, since the pool bar livens up in the evenings. Town is nearly half an hour's walk away, so a car earns its keep. The season runs from mid-April to mid-October.
Jean-Pierre Pinelli came back to the Balagne because he could not get it out of his head. Plenty of families now return to La Villa every summer for the same reason, some of them into a second generation. Homesickness, it seems, is catching.
On the walls
The New York painter JonOne was among the first artists invited to hang canvases in La Villa's lobby and lounges, by the gallery's own account; he has come back with new work each season since.
A room facing the citadel
The Citadel Sea View Room is the hotel's main category with a view: 35 to 45 m², a king-size or twin beds, and either a balcony over the bay or a door straight onto the garden. From an upper floor the old town on its rock sits in the window frame. The Garden Room, the same size, looks inland instead.
The main pool
The 25-metre pool in the middle of the estate is the one for lengths, ringed by loungers under umbrella pines and shade sails. The Pool Bar beside it serves drinks and light meals by day; from mid-June to mid-September it also runs a lounge with music. A second pool next to the bar is meant for children.
La Villart
The hotel's own gallery runs through white arched rooms off the lobby, with large contemporary canvases, sculpture on plinths and a grand piano among the works. Exhibitions change, some pieces stay, and artists come for talks and workshops. Works also hang in the lounges and Jo's Bar, where Antoine Pinelli chooses what goes on the walls.
Dinner facing the citadel
La Table by La Villa is the evening restaurant, set on a panoramic terrace that looks across the bay to the citadel and the mountains. Fabio Volontè cooks Mediterranean dishes from Corsican, Italian and French produce, following the seasons. La Terrasse handles breakfast and a lighter bistro lunch, so dinner here is worth booking as an occasion.

Why this one
01

La Table faces it across the bay.
02
Five pools.
One of them 25 metres long.
03
A gallery on the way to dinner.
La Villart, under the same roof.
The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Choose the citadel over the garden.
The two room categories are the same size, 35 to 45 m², and differ only in what lies outside. Garden Rooms look onto the cypresses and lavender; Citadel Sea View Rooms look over the bay to the old town. In both, the outside space is either a balcony or direct access to the garden, so the floor matters too. For a view from bed, ask for an upper-floor Citadel room; families with toddlers may prefer the garden level.
02
Come in high summer for the noise, in spring for the quiet.
The hotel opens from late April to mid-October; for 2027 the reopening date is 23 April. The Pool Bar's lounge, the musical part of the evening around the main pool, runs only from 15 June to 15 September. Outside those weeks the place is calmer, the pools at Les Collines and La Nouvelle Demeure are emptier, and the indoor pool in the spa covers a cool day. Couples who want peace should aim for May or late September.
03
Two kilometres from town, on foot or not.
La Villa sits on the road up to Notre-Dame-de-la-Serra, 2 km above the centre of Calvi, and the walk back up is steep. The hotel's shuttle runs to the town centre and to Calvi beach, charged per room by the day or the week; it does not go to the airport, which is a taxi ride of about 7 km. For the Balagne villages, the Revellata or wine visits, hire a car through the concierge; valet parking takes it at the door.
04
For families, book the space, then the sitter.
The Two-Bedroom Suite has two bedrooms with balconies and a large terrace, and the two apartments go further, with 120 or 200 m² and sea views. Babysitting by qualified staff is booked at reception, which leaves the evening open for La Table. Children use the family pool next to the Pool Bar under a parent's eye, and in the spa they must stay with their parents throughout. Small dogs under 8 kg are accepted, for a charge.
The price question
The money buys a family-run hillside hotel with a view of Calvi's citadel from the pool, the dinner table and many balconies, an art gallery under the same roof and a spa kept for residents. It does not buy a beach or a short walk to town: the sea is reached by shuttle or car, and the liveliest part of the evening belongs to high summer.
What the money buys
A 25-metre pool and four more, one of them indoors and heated.
Dinner on a terrace facing the citadel without leaving the hotel.
A 500 m² spa reserved for hotel guests.
What it leaves out
A beach of its own: Calvi beach is a shuttle ride away.
A walk to town that is easy in both directions.
Any opening between mid-October and late April.
Who it suits
Book it for a week in June or September with a hired car, a room or suite facing the citadel, and two dinners at La Table. Anyone who wants to step from the room onto sand, or to stay in Calvi in winter, should look elsewhere.
Who should spend elsewhere
Domaine de Murtoli
A farming estate of some 2,500 hectares in the Ortolo valley near Sartène, run by the Canarelli family: about twenty restored shepherds' houses and old stone houses let one by one, a nine-room hotel at the farm, three restaurants and a beach kept for guests.
Hôtel Marinca & Spa
A family-run seaside hotel on a cliffside above the gulf of Valinco at Olmeto Plage, in south-west Corsica, with a restaurant on its private beach, three outdoor pools among pines and a 600 m² spa with an indoor pool.
