Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Côte d'Azur, France43°41′ N 7°07′ E

Saint-Paul-de-Vence has spent decades persuading visitors to look at art. Galleries occupy its old lanes, and the Fondation Maeght stands among the pines beyond the walls. Down the hill, Le Domaine du Mas de Pierre has made an installation that is considerably easier to understand: a beach. There is real sand, a turquoise lagoon, waterfalls, palms and a slide, all of it some distance from the Mediterranean. It is an unusual sight in a village better known for painting than paddling.

The arrangement is more useful than the joke suggests. The walled village is close enough for a morning among the galleries, while the hotel grounds offer something to do when children have had enough of looking. A shuttle serves Saint-Paul, subject to its timetable, and the paths through the estate offer another kind of outing: olive trees, gardens and places to stop without anyone asking you to admire a masterpiece. This is not an attempt to bring the coast inland. It is a way of enjoying the inland Riviera without constantly driving back to it.

Seventy-six rooms and suites occupy a collection of Provençal bastides, some old, others built to sit comfortably beside them. The decoration belongs to the generous, traditional school of southern French hotels, with warm fabrics and terraces opening to the greenery. The adults-only Bastide des Fleurs has its own pool and a more sheltered mood. Elsewhere, the estate makes room for families with a children's club and the lagoon's shallow water. Two sorts of holiday coexist without requiring everyone to share the same lounger.

The swimming choices go well beyond the sand. A twenty-five-metre outdoor pool is intended for proper lengths; within the two-thousand-square-metre spa, a heated indoor pool, counter-current bicycles and thermal facilities offer another afternoon's occupation. Children have restricted access to the spa in summer, when the lagoon is their more natural territory. This is the rare inland hotel where the question of whether to leave the grounds can genuinely take some time to answer.

Food follows the estate's two speeds. La Table de Pierre offers an ambitious dinner, while more relaxed eating can be found without dressing the evening as an occasion. Breakfast is another opportunity to stay in the gardens instead of rushing uphill. The hotel's strength is the ease with which a stay can alternate between a cultural morning, a long lunch and an afternoon in the water, with no obligation to choose one sort of Riviera holiday.

That breadth comes with compromises. The lagoon is deliberately artificial, and anyone dreaming of open sea will still need a car. A large estate can feel busy when families and events converge, while service and dining reservations need more planning than the informal setting implies. The rooms vary across the bastides, so outlook and proximity to the livelier pools matter. The price is for a resort with an inland beach, not a small village inn.

Up in Saint-Paul, the galleries change their exhibitions and the village fills with visitors who have come to look. Down the hill, the sand stays where it was put, ready for people who have decided that an afternoon need not be improved by another painting.

Through the looking glass

The kids' club, Le Jardin d'Alice, is a 150 m² Wonderland of giant mushrooms, teacups and a teapot, with three caravans for workshops.

Sand at the water's edge

The lagoon sits apart from the historic bastides, reached through planting, with real sand under the loungers, rocks, palms and a waterfall. A lower pool with a cave and the 10 m slide, for children aged four and over, form the children's end. In high season it belongs to residents; in some spring and autumn periods, it takes day guests from outside.

A Suite Prestige with hot tub

Two suites in the Bastides Prestige, 55 to 57 m² with one bedroom and a sitting and dining room, have a hot tub on a private terrace or garden, looking over the gardens or the hills. They are the only rooms on the estate with their own warm water outdoors, since neither outdoor pool is heated.

The heated pool in the spa

The spa's 18 m indoor pool, heated and open all year, combines swimming lanes with jets, hydromassage benches, gentle waves and counter-current aquabikes, used in the group aqua classes. Tall windows open the hall to the garden. Children from four may swim here with a parent at set times, though in summer their access is curtailed.

The Bastide des Fleurs pool

The adults-only bastide keeps its own pool, ringed with cabanas and loungers and screened by cypresses; it is not heated. Six suites share it. The arrangement gives couples a pool without inflatables, while the lagoon, the restaurants and the bar remain a short walk away and shared with everyone.

Why this one

  1. Sand without the coast.

    A lagoon below the village.

  2. Three kinds of bastide.

    Rooms, Prestige, adults only.

  3. A spa built for winter.

The one pool that is heated.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Only one pool is warm.

Of the four places to swim, only one is described as heated: the 18 m indoor pool in the spa, with a heated jacuzzi on the spa terrace. The 25 m outdoor pool is not heated, nor is the adults-only pool at the Bastide des Fleurs, and nothing is said about the lagoon. In spring and autumn, when the outdoor water is coolest, the lagoon also admits day guests from outside. For a stay outside high summer, plan the swimming around the spa.

  2. Children and the spa.

The spa admits children from four, with a parent, to the indoor pool and the outdoor jacuzzi only, in an afternoon window; saunas, hammam and Snow Cave are for over-18s. In high summer the rules tighten: access is limited, and the spa's own activity rules exclude children from the pool altogether. Le Jardin d'Alice, for ages three to twelve, opens during French school holidays and is charged by the hour; babysitting goes through the concierge. Families should read the season before the brochure.

  3. Adults only, within a family resort.

The Bastide des Fleurs holds six suites: two Suites Fleurs of 54 m² and four Junior Suites Fleurs of 39 m². It has its own unheated pool with cabanas and a butler in summer, but breakfast is served in the suite or at La Table de Pierre, and the restaurants, bar and lagoon are shared with the rest of the estate. The whole bastide can also be booked privately, so availability for a single suite is not a given.

  4. Choosing among the Prestige categories.

The 22 keys of the Bastides Prestige fall into four categories, each with a private terrace. Ten Junior Suites Prestige of 37 to 39 m² take up to four guests, and some connect, which suits families. The six Suites Prestige of 55 to 57 m² carry butler service in summer, a service reserved to that category. Only two suites, the same size, have a hot tub on a private terrace or garden, looking over the gardens or the hills. Deluxe Prestige rooms are 35 m².

The price question

The money buys a self-contained resort a short drive from Nice airport: a lagoon with real sand, a large spa, gardens tended without pesticides, a gastronomic restaurant and a kids' club, all below a village that most people see only by day. It does not buy warm outdoor water outside summer, a lagoon restaurant that is always running, or a quiet adults-only hideaway entirely apart from families. The value depends on matching season, room family and the ages in the party.

What the money buys

  • Use of the pools, jacuzzis, saunas, hammam and Snow Cave included for resident guests, along with group aqua classes.
  • A lagoon with a sand beach, waterfall and slide, reserved for residents in high season.
  • A choice of three room families, from Superior rooms to Prestige suites with private hot tubs.

What it leaves out

  • Heated outdoor water: the 25 m pool and the adults-only pool are both unheated.
  • A dependable lagoon restaurant: its food service has closed, and the lagoon bar keeps restricted days.
  • The sea: the coast is a drive away.

Who it suits

Book it for a family summer that alternates mornings in Saint-Paul with afternoons on the sand, or for a couple in the Bastide des Fleurs who do not mind children elsewhere on the estate. Look elsewhere for a beach on the Mediterranean, for warm outdoor swimming in April, or for a small hotel where the whole house is quiet.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Château Saint-Martin & Spa

On the hill above Vence: 41 rooms and suites in a rebuilt château and six villas across the road, an infinity pool and a La Prairie spa.

  • Terre Blanche

At Tourrettes in the Pays de Fayence, Var: 115 suites and villas, two golf courses and a Kids' Club.
