In the 1950s, France needed somewhere quiet to keep the exiled sultan of Morocco. It chose a hotel in Zonza, high in the mountains of southern Corsica, at the end of a road so twisting that nobody arrives there by accident. Seventy-odd years later, the same house takes in guests who come entirely of their own accord, and most of them leave with some reluctance.

The Mouflon d'Or is a grand old house of some twenty-five rooms in a park of cedars and chestnut trees, facing the granite needles of Bavella. For decades its shutters stayed closed. Then Lise Canarelli, who also runs Cala Rossa on the coast, teamed up with Anthony Bornea, a Zonza boy who had always wanted to see the place lit again, and in 2025 the lights came back on. Upstairs the rooms are tall and airy, with antique chandeliers overhead, and from the best balconies Bavella looks like a postcard nobody needs to send. Two old stone shepherds' cottages, hidden where the forest begins, offer a little more privacy.

The house has always had a slightly improbable air. It was built early in the last century by the PLM, the great French railway company, for travellers of the Belle Époque, in a village no train has ever reached. Guests did the last stretch by road, a detail the company presumably left off its famous travel posters. The Art Deco glass roof over the restaurant still looks as though it is waiting for the evening express from Paris.

Days here tend to begin with walking boots and good intentions. The GR20 passes close by, and the gorges below are made for canyoning. Quite a few end at the heated pool instead, with lunch served beside it when the sun is out, or at the bar high above the estate, where watching the granite needles turn pink at sunset counts as exercise for the eyes.

In the evening, the glass roof shelters A Nepita, a restaurant named after the small wild mint that grows all over Corsica. The chef, Sébastien Chauchat, rarely puts more than three or four ingredients on a plate, which flatters the island's produce and leaves plenty of room for the view.

The Mouflon d'Or is for couples and walkers who would rather have Corsica's mountains than its beaches, although the sea at Porto-Vecchio is under an hour away. Getting here needs a car and a steady stomach on the bends. The pools, sensibly, open only in the warmer months.

The sultan was eventually allowed to go home. Guests at the Mouflon d'Or may leave whenever they like, which is not quite the same thing as wanting to.

Before the lights came back

The house's own history says it once sheltered noble political exiles, then stood silent for decades before its new owners stripped it back to the walls and restored it.

The suites above the limes

Suites Tigliu and Alizu take their names from the avenue of century-old lime trees below their windows. At 56 m², on the forest side, they look over the park to the surrounding mountains and have a sofa bed for a child. Alizu adds a balcony running all round; Nociu, the only suite on the top floor, keeps a period fireplace.

A Nepita under the glass roof

The restaurant works in three settings: a beamed room by the fireplace, the room under the glass roof, open to the gardens, and a terrace facing the mountains for lunch and dinner in good weather. Sébastien Chauchat cooks seasonal Corsican-Mediterranean food with herbs and flowers gathered from the maquis, and non-residents can book a table.

The heated pool in the park

The outdoor pool measures 25 by 8 metres and is set into the maquis of the park, facing the reliefs of the Alta Rocca. It is heated, and the Pool Bar beside it serves lunch and drinks. On cooler days the spa has its own heated indoor pool, with a sauna, a hammam and five treatment rooms.

The caseddu at the forest edge

Two old stone sheepfolds stand at the edge of the forest, apart from the main house. Caseddu Mirtu, 100 m², is laid out for a couple and is step-free. Caseddu Tuma, 110 m², adds a children's room with two single beds. Both have a terrace, a bath and a walk-in shower, and a sofa bed on request.

Why this one

  1. A railway company's hotel.

Built by the PLM, restored with care.

  2. Two stone caseddu.

At the edge of the forest.

  3. Warm water, both ways.

    Heated pools indoors and out.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Pick the room by its outlook.

The rooms face different ways. Leccia and Nuceta open onto a wooded panorama and catch the first sun; Castagnu and Astratella face west, towards sunsets over the foothills of the Alta Rocca. The Junior Suite Scopa has the widest view over the Alta Rocca. Small balconies come only with Nuceta, Astratella and Lariccio, and Alizu has one running all round. No room description names Bavella, so ask which rooms actually look towards the needles before booking.

  2. Caseddu, terrace suite or main house.

Three kinds of stay. The main house has the chandeliers, the period fireplaces and the shortest walk to dinner. Four newer suites, Murza, Pugna, Figu and Peri, have a 25 m² private terrace each, and Murza and Pugna lie outside the main building under vaulted ceilings. The two caseddu stand further off at the forest edge: Mirtu is step-free and works for a couple, Tuma has a separate children's room with two single beds. In the house, one Junior Suite Fica is adapted for reduced mobility.

  3. The sea goes through Cala Rossa.

Guests have arranged access to the sister hotel, the Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa on the bay of Porto-Vecchio, about 45 minutes away by car: its Spa Nucca, its private beach and its beach restaurant. It is booked through the hotel, subject to availability, and not offered in July and August. For a stay that mixes mountain and sea, the shoulder months work best, since the arrangement pauses exactly when the coast is busiest.

  4. A seasonal house with house rules.

The Domaine opens for a season and closes for winter: it has shut for 2026 and announces its return for spring 2027, without published dates yet. Pets are not admitted anywhere on the estate, including the restaurant, and men are asked to wear long trousers in the evening throughout the house. The road up from the coast is long and winding, so plan arrival with time in hand rather than straight off a late flight into Figari.

The price question

A stay here buys mountain quiet with a full hotel around it: a large spa with an indoor pool, a heated 25-metre pool in the park, a restaurant in three settings and a bar with a fire. It does not buy the sea at the door: the nearest beaches are around 40 minutes away, and the house closes for winter.

What the money buys

  • Two stone caseddu of 100 and 110 m² with terraces, at the forest edge.
  • A heated indoor pool in the spa and a heated outdoor pool in the park.
  • Arranged access to Cala Rossa's spa, beach and beach restaurant outside July and August.

What it leaves out

  • A beach within walking distance: the nearest is about 40 minutes by car.
  • Winter stays: the Domaine closes after its season.
  • Room for dogs: pets are not admitted.

Who it suits

Book it for three or four nights of walking, canyoning and long dinners, with a car and a room chosen for its outlook. Anyone who wants to swim in the sea every morning is better placed on the coast, and could add Cala Rossa before or after.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa

The sister house on the bay of Porto-Vecchio, the Canarelli family's seaside home: a private beach, beach restaurants and the Spa Nucca of 500 m² with seven treatment rooms, a pool, sauna and hammam, for adults only.

  • Domaine de Murtoli

An estate in the Ortolo valley near Sartène, in south-west Corsica, where guests stay in restored stone houses spread across the land, some by the sea and some in the hills.
