A museum, a city hoteland a beach, at one address.
Promenade des Anglais, Côte d'Azur, France43°42′ N 7°15′ E
Museums close at six. The Negresco never does. On Nice's Promenade des Anglais, the pink-domed hotel is a collection of some six thousand works of art, a seaside address with the beach across the road, and a city hotel in a place that keeps going long after the summer visitors have gone. Few grand hotels on this coast manage those three identities at once. The question is not simply how impressive its rooms are, but what it feels like to live among so many competing things.
The answer is lively. In the morning, guests cross the Promenade towards N La Plage. Later, people gather beneath the Salon Royal's enormous Baccarat chandelier or take a table at La Rotonde, the brasserie shaped like a carousel. By evening the bars have found a different company: people celebrating and people returning from the city. Le Negresco does not offer the studied hush of the capes. It belongs to Nice, and Nice makes itself heard.
The spectacle owes much to Jeanne Augier, who took charge in 1957 and filled the hotel with art from many centuries, without much concern for whether one style matched the next. A royal portrait may share the journey with a work by Niki de Saint Phalle. The restored façade and pink dome keep the building unmistakable from the street; indoors, some of the strangest encounters happen on a staircase or outside a lift. Upstairs, 102 rooms and twenty-eight suites carry the same freedom of taste. Their decoration varies widely, so the view and the particular room matter more than the general name of the category.
There is serious luxury beneath the theatricality. At Le Chantecler, Virginie Basselot, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, cooks Mediterranean food in a grand historic room with a Michelin star. N Le Spa has brought an indoor pool, sauna and hammam to the house, while breakfast is another occasion. The sea-facing bedrooms make the strongest case for staying here: Nice's broad bay does as much for them as any piece in the art collection.
The most private pleasure comes late. After dinner, when the public rooms begin to empty, the corridors become a gallery that hotel guests can revisit at their own pace. A sculpture appears at a landing, another painting beyond the stairs. It is a different experience from visiting a museum with a crowd and a closing announcement. Because the hotel is open through the year, that quiet hour belongs to a January stay as much as a July one.
The eccentricity is not without cost. A busy coastal road separates the hotel from the shore, the décor can be overwhelming, and the rooms vary enough in character that not every one will feel equally desirable. The lobby and lifts have to serve a large, active house, and the beach loungers are not simply part of every room. Travellers expecting the secluded ease of a small Riviera hideaway will find a city, and a considerable amount of theatre, still going on around them.
In most museums, the guards eventually ask everyone to leave. At Le Negresco, the doors stay open, the bars fill up and somebody brings breakfast in the morning. It is the rare museum in which the collection has to make room for the people sleeping upstairs.
The chandelier that missed Moscow
Tsar Nicholas II ordered a pair of Baccarat chandeliers for the Kremlin. After the Revolution only one was delivered; its twin, 4.6 metres tall, hangs in the Salon Royal.
Room 424, Deluxe Sea View
Room 424 is a Deluxe Sea View Room of about 30 m², dressed in the house's Oneiric style: mint walls, plaster medallions and sculpted figures either side of the bed, with the Mediterranean in the window. The same category exists in five other styles, from Majestic to Audacious, so the name guarantees the sea and the size, not this look.
La Rotonde, under the blue cupola
La Rotonde fills the south-facing rotunda of the ground floor with the wooden horses of a former merry-go-round, gold-clad walls, a deep-blue cupola studded with lights and a mezzanine shaped like a liner's gangway. It is the hotel's everyday room, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a terrace on the Promenade.
N La Plage, across the Promenade
N La Plage lies on the pebbles directly opposite the hotel, with white deckchairs on timber walkways and parasols facing the open bay. Behind them, the landscape designer Hervé Frezal, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, planted the lounge with jasmine, fig and palm, and pergolas and latticework borrow from French Grand Siècle gardens. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner in season.
The pool at N Le Spa
The pool lies inside N Le Spa, 700 m² designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel beside the Salon Royal, with underwater music, saunas, hammams and seven treatment rooms. The spa also has its own entrance on rue de Rivoli and welcomes people from Nice, so it works as a city spa as much as a hotel one, and as the house's swimming water outside the beach season.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
The category buys the outlook, not the look.
Room names describe the view and size; the decoration is decided by six house styles, from the Majestic to the art-deco Audacious. The Deluxe Sea View Room appears in all six, so two guests in the same category may wake up in Louis XV pastel or in a pop-art bedroom. Below that line nothing faces the sea head-on: Superior rooms look onto the inner façade, Family Deluxe onto the courtyard, Rivoli onto the Palais Masséna garden, Exclusive onto garden and sea.
02
Independent, and still being restored.
Jeanne Augier ran the house from 1957 until her death in 2019; since 2021 it has belonged to the Mesnage-Augier-Negresco Endowment Fund, set up in 2009. There is no chain behind it, and the building is still being worked on: the upper façade was renewed in 2022, the Belle Époque statues returned to it in January 2026, and the sixth floor has become a single 400 m² penthouse with 200 m² of terraces over the Baie des Anges.
03
The beach is a separate booking.
N La Plage sits opposite the hotel, across the Promenade, and works only in season. Deckchairs and wooden double beds are reserved through the beach itself, and the official pages do not say that a room includes them. Outside the season the sea remains a view from the front rooms, the water for swimming is the spa pool, and the hotel's outdoor life shrinks to La Rotonde's terrace, which faces the sea all year.
04
One chef, three tables.
Virginie Basselot has run Le Chantecler since 2018, in a Régence room with panelling from the Château de Chaintré. Her name also sits over La Rotonde and the beach restaurant, where Kévin Pasquet runs the kitchen under her supervision, so a stay can cover her cooking at three levels of formality without leaving the address. Le Chantecler received a new summer marquee in spring 2026, and its kitchens are to be renovated next.
The price question
The money buys a 1913 house on the Promenade des Anglais that functions as hotel, collection and beach address at once, with Le Chantecler and a modern 700 m² spa under the same roof. It does not buy calm, a garden or an outdoor pool, or a sea view at every level. Pay for 'Sea View' in the room name, or the stay becomes a museum visit with a bedroom attached.
What the money buys
Sea View rooms and suites facing the Baie des Anges across the Promenade.
A collection of more than six thousand pieces lived in, not visited.
N Le Spa's pool, hammams and seven treatment rooms under the same roof.
What it leaves out
Quiet: the Promenade des Anglais runs between the hotel and the sea.
A sea view in Superior, Rivoli or Family Deluxe rooms.
A beach outside the season, or deckchairs included as standard.
Who it suits
Book it for a few days of Nice itself: the old town and museums on foot, dinner at Le Chantecler, the beach across the road in summer, and a house that is as interesting in January as in July. Look elsewhere for a garden, an outdoor pool or the quiet of a cape.
Who should spend elsewhere
Hôtel du Couvent
In old Nice, a 17th-century convent turned into 88 rooms and suites around a garden, with ancient baths and a movement studio.
Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée
Further along the Promenade des Anglais, behind the listed 1929 Art Deco façade: 187 rooms and twelve suites, with a casino in the building.
