Every host knows the rule. However fine the drawing room, however carefully the table is laid, the party ends up in the kitchen. Le Strato, a small family hotel at the forest's edge in Courchevel 1850, obeys that rule with an Alpine twist. Its drawing rooms are immaculate. Its kitchen, in the sense that matters, is the ski room.
That would surely have pleased its founder. Laurent Boix-Vives built some of the first lifts around Courchevel, then turned a struggling Rossignol into the largest ski maker in the world, largely on the back of one celebrated racing ski, the Strato. In his eighties he came back to the resort with his wife Jeanine, opened a hotel and gave it the name of the ski. Their twin daughters, Christine and Sylvie, run it today, in a family that has always judged things by how they behave on snow.
Among the boots is where the house lets its hair down. Mornings there have a cheerful bustle: someone crouches to wrestle each boot on and close every buckle, plans for the day bounce between the benches, and nobody heads for the lift without a slice of cake or a biscuit in hand. In the afternoon skiers drift back red-cheeked and the room turns into a café, a mug of hot chocolate in every glove. It is the one corner of the hotel where nobody seems to be on their best behaviour.
The drawing room, meanwhile, is exactly that. The suites are generous and beautifully made in oak, wool and pale Scandinavian wood, the pool rests hushed beneath a chandelier of black Murano glass, and at Slalom 1850 the chef Thomas Prod'homme, mentored by one of Provence's great culinary names, sends out precise, polished plates, a smoked egg with spaghetti among them. Everything is in its place. Everything is very well behaved.
Two kinds of guest can sit at the same table here and leave with different hotels. Skiers who are asleep by ten and back among the boots by half past eight, with La Croisette, the hub of the lifts, a short walk away, find exactly what they came for: a family-run house that never fusses and never gets between them and the snow.
The evenings are quieter than the ski room: dinner is a calm affair where the conversation rarely takes off. The atmosphere runs thinner than the rates, which sit firmly in Courchevel territory, there is no nightlife to speak of, and the doors close when the season ends.
Le Strato keeps the oldest rule of entertaining, in an Alpine dialect. The drawing room is immaculate, but the stories guests carry home were made in the kitchen, among the boots, with cake in one hand and a buckle in the other.
On the label
The original Strato ski carried Annie Famose at the 1966 World Championships in Portillo and the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble; a new version is built today by Rossignol's racing department.
The ski room
The Luxury Ski Room carries the name of Bernard Orcel and opens straight onto the blue Cospillot piste. A ski valet prepares skis and boots, glass cases hold goggles, helmets and clothing, and the latest skis can be rented or bought. In the afternoon crêpes are served on the ski-room terrace outside.
The pool under the chandelier
The spa lies at the heart of the hotel, with direct lift access from the rooms. Its heated indoor pool runs between slate-clad pillars beneath a Murano glass chandelier, with two saunas, a hammam and a jacuzzi alongside. Treatments use Cellcosmet, a Swiss line, and there is a hairdresser.
Slalom 1850
Slalom 1850 serves dinner only, in a room of tall wooden windows, leather chairs and globe lamps, with three menus named Slalom, Schuss and Sphère. Thomas Prod'homme cooks here and, at lunch and on Sundays, at [S] Corner. The menu leans on Alpine produce: trout dressed with fir, cauliflower turned into a sculpture, veal paired with sea spray.
A Duplex Luxe
The Duplex Luxe covers 100 square metres on two floors for up to four guests. Downstairs are a sitting room with a sofa bed, a dressing room and a full bathroom, with a balcony over the mountains and the hotel entrance; upstairs, under the roof beams, the bedroom has its own sitting area, a large square bath and a mountain-view balcony.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
The view starts at Junior.
Every room has a balcony or terrace, but not every balcony faces the same way. Standard and Superior rooms, the two entry categories, look onto the forest. From the Junior upwards the hotel lists views of the slopes and mountains. The two 100 m² duplexes differ too: the Duplex Superior opens onto the forest on both floors, while the Duplex Luxe looks to the mountains, with one balcony over the hotel entrance. Junior rooms are also the category adapted for guests with reduced mobility.
02
Slalom 1850 serves six nights.
The gastronomic restaurant serves dinner only, from Monday to Saturday, and it takes outside diners as well as hotel guests, so in the busy weeks a table is worth reserving with the room rather than on arrival. On Sundays, and at lunch, the same kitchen cooks at [S] Corner, a looser room of French and Italian classics with street-food touches and desserts such as churros. Dogs are welcome in the hotel but may not enter the restaurants, the bar or the spa.
03
Half the stay is paid up front.
The hotel's terms leave little room for a change of plan. A booking is confirmed only by a non-refundable deposit of half the total cost of the stay, and the balance falls due thirty days before arrival. If it is not paid after two reminders, the booking is cancelled and the deposit kept. A ski week that depends on snow, school dates or a group's agreement is best insured separately before the deposit is sent.
04
Room for a family, by the floor.
The Deluxe takes three, with a separate corner holding a sofa bed and its own shower room, which suits one child. The Duplex Luxe and Duplex Superior take four on two floors joined by stairs, and the Chalet Timeless takes four on three levels, with a kitchen and a fireplace. Larger families can take one of the seven apartments, of two to four bedrooms, and still use the spa, the ski room and the concierge. A games room keeps children and teenagers busy.
The price question
The money buys a small house run by the family that named it, the Cospillot piste at the ski-room door and a kitchen with real ambition. It does not buy the scale or the evening life of the larger Courchevel hotels: dinner is calm, the entry rooms look at the forest rather than the slopes, and the booking terms are strict. The fair comparison is a slope-view room further along the Rue de Bellecôte.
What the money buys
Ski-in, ski-out from the blue Cospillot piste, with a ski valet and Bernard Orcel's ski room.
A balcony or terrace with every room, from the 28 m² Standard upwards.
A heated indoor pool, two saunas, a hammam and a jacuzzi in the spa.
What it leaves out
Slope views in the two entry categories, which look onto the forest.
A gastronomic dinner on Sundays: Slalom 1850 serves Monday to Saturday.
Flexibility: half the stay is paid as a non-refundable deposit.
Who it suits
Book it for a ski week where the days on the piste matter most: a Junior or larger for the view, Slalom 1850 reserved for one of its six nights, and early evenings. Guests who want late nights, a lively bar scene or the freedom to cancel close to the date are better placed elsewhere in 1850.
Who should spend elsewhere
Cheval Blanc Courchevel
The first house of the Cheval Blanc brand, ski-in and ski-out on the Jardin Alpin: 36 keys including an Apartment and Le Chalet, Le 1947 with Yannick Alléno, a Guerlain spa and Le Carrousel for children.
Aman Le Mélézin
Four storeys directly on the Bellecôte piste, on the same Rue de Bellecôte: 28 rooms, suites and apartments, Japanese dining at Akari and Yakiniku, and a spa with a swimming pool spread over two floors. Reopens 10 December 2026.
