Waves beyond the dune,a lake at the door.

Landes, France43°40′ N 1°26′ W

Every surfer at La Gravière has someone on the sand. The wave breaks just off Hossegor's town beach, one of the heaviest in the world, a thick grey-green wall of Atlantic that snaps boards and occasionally collarbones. From the shore it is impossible to look away. A figure paddles out, a set rolls in, the figure drops down the face and vanishes into the foam, and on the beach a person who only came to watch starts counting the seconds.

A few hundred metres inland, behind the dunes, lies the other Hossegor: a long salt lake so calm that children paddle in it and the pines stand upside down in the water. On its shore, in a 1930s villa in the Basque-Landes style that locals have known for generations, Frédéric Biousse and Guillaume Foucher opened their surf lodge. They chose the sheltered side of the dune, and the choice seems to have been made with the person on the sand in mind.

Inside, everything exhales. Walls are white, wood is pale, linen is crumpled on purpose, and most of the twenty-five rooms open onto terraces facing the lake, the pines or the dunes. Surfboards hang on the walls like paintings in a gallery, each one a survivor, each one watched through clenched teeth by somebody at some point.

The moment that explains the place comes at the end of a session. Salt drying stiff on the skin, arms like wet rope, the roar of La Gravière still in their ears, surfer and watcher walk back over the dune together. Then the lake opens up in front of them, flat and silver, a single paddleboard drawing a line across it that seems to hang there for minutes. Shoulders drop. Nobody says much. Nobody needs to.

Everything else here is tuned to that kind of tiredness. A generous spa, the largest for miles around, works on whatever the ocean has done to backs and shoulders. Breakfast caters to appetites sharpened by cold water, with charcuterie from the Basque hills of the Aldudes valley, and nobody eats quite like a surfer who has been in the sea since first light.

This is a surf lodge through and through, simple and serene, never showy, and the town centre is a short pedal away. In high summer Hossegor fills up and the lake road with it. In winter, when the biggest swells arrive, many shutters close and the town goes back to the people who live and surf there. Surfers feel at home at once; the people who love them enough to come along may feel it even more.

Most boards at La Gravière end their days in two pieces. The lucky ones retire to the walls of Les Hortensias du Lac, high and dry above the flat water, where nothing worse can happen to them than being admired. On the good days their owners come back in one piece too, and somewhere on the terrace, someone finally stops counting.

Whole house

The three Lake View Suites share a separate House on the Lake, and the hotel lets all three together for groups of six to twelve.

A suite over the lake

The three Lake View Suites occupy their own building, the House on the Lake, and are laid out as lofts of 58 to 63 m² with a sitting room and sofa bed. Each has a private terrace or balcony facing the marine lake. They take two adults and two children, and all three can be booked together for a group of six to twelve.

The infinity pool

The pool sits below the villa with its edge towards the lake, lined with loungers and green parasols under the pines. It is heated from Easter to All Saints' Day, which sets the swimming season. From the Superior Lake View rooms in the Cottage, several of the terraces and balconies look over the pool and gardens towards the water.

The spa by the water

The 450 m² spa is built in pale stone, light wood and sandy ceramics. Inside are a sauna, hammam, cold plunge, whirlpool, treatment rooms and a tea room; the outdoor Nordic bath sits on the terrace facing the lake. Treatments use myBlend's peptide and LED protocols, and the spa opens daily, by reservation, to residents and outside guests.

The glass dining room

The restaurant's glass-walled room extends the villa's original architecture towards the lake and opens onto a large terrace under the pines. Chef Philippe Moreno, from Marseille, cooks line-caught fish, shellfish and vegetables from neighbouring farms. From 9 July to 27 August it serves every evening; outside that window it closes on Wednesdays, Tuesday lunchtimes and Sunday evenings.

Why this one

  1. The lake at the door.

Direct access to Hossegor's marine lake.

  2. The ocean over the dune.

    200 metres to the Atlantic.

  3. A spa for after the surf.

    450 m² facing the lake.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Pick the building for the terrace.

The 25 rooms are spread over three buildings, and outdoor space depends on which one. In the Cottage, the Duplexes have a private balcony, the Superior Lake View a terrace or balcony, and the 40 m² Junior Suite Terrace a large private terrace and kitchenette. The Lake View Suites in the House on the Lake have a terrace or balcony over the water. In the main house, the Junior Suite Lake View and Hortense under the roof have the lake view but list no terrace.

  2. The calendar has gaps.

The hotel does not open all year. In 2026 it opened from 12 to 21 March on Thursday to Saturday only, then daily from 26 March to 10 November, and opens again daily from 10 December to 3 January. The heated pool runs only from Easter to All Saints' Day. A December visit for the winter swells is possible over the holidays, but it means the spa and the lake rather than the pool, and the dates should be checked before planning.

  3. Plan dinner around the closing days.

From 9 July to 27 August the gastronomic restaurant serves every evening. Outside that window it closes all day Wednesday, at lunch on Tuesday and on Sunday evening, and the Beach House is a summer lunch table that does not open on Mondays. A stay that includes a Wednesday in spring or autumn means dinner in Hossegor itself, which is five minutes away by bike; classic and electric bicycles can be hired at the hotel for the ride.

  4. Families, dogs and boards.

The Duplexes take two adults below and two children on a mezzanine with single beds, and the Junior Suite Terrace adds a sofa bed and kitchenette for longer stays. Dogs stay at no extra charge, but the hotel asks for the dog's details when booking. Surfers can leave boards in a secure surf room, and the hotel arranges lessons and board rental, as well as paddleboards and rowing boats on the lake.

The price question

The money buys a surf lodge on the calm side of Hossegor: the lake at the foot of the garden, the ocean 200 metres away over the dune, a large spa and a heated pool for most of the year. It does not buy a sea view, a hotel open all winter or a restaurant serving every evening outside high summer. The comparison is with Biarritz, half an hour south, where the ocean is the view.

What the money buys

  • A 450 m² spa with an outdoor Nordic bath on the lake terrace.
  • A heated infinity pool facing the lake from Easter to All Saints' Day.
  • A secure surf room, board rental and lessons, with La Gravière nearby.

What it leaves out

  • A view of the ocean: rooms face the lake, the pines or the dunes.
  • Year-round opening: the hotel closes for weeks in late autumn and winter.
  • A terrace in the main-house rooms.

Who it suits

Book it from late spring to early autumn for surfers and the people who come with them, in the Cottage or the House on the Lake if a terrace matters, with dinner fixed on a day the restaurant serves. Anyone who wants to wake up to the ocean itself, or to travel in January or February, is better placed elsewhere.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Hôtel du Palais

Eighty-six rooms and fifty-six suites in the rebuilt summer residence of Napoleon III and Eugénie on the beach at Biarritz, with a seawater pool and a Guerlain spa.

  • Ha(a)ïtza, Pyla-sur-Mer

A 1930 neo-Basque hotel on a street corner in Pyla-sur-Mer: 38 rooms, suites and an apartment, a pastry shop, brasserie and bar, a covered pool and a spa.
