The most useful thing Les Sources de Cheverny lends its guests may be a pair of rubber boots. They are meant for mushroom hunting in the forest, and they are a fair summary of the place. This is a country hotel in the Loire Valley, close to the château of Cheverny, where an old manor and its farm buildings share a clearing with new wooden cabins around a pond. Forty-five hectares of woods and orchards surround the lot. The luxury mostly happens outdoors, and some of it involves mud.

The couple behind it, Alice and Jérôme Tourbier, made their name with Les Sources de Caudalie among the vines near Bordeaux, then chose this old royal hunting country in the Sologne for something wilder. What they built works like a very comfortable village. Getting here takes a car, but once parked it can stay put for days while guests borrow bikes to ride from their rooms to dinner. Beyond the manor, the long outdoor pool is lined in green so that it passes for a pond, which means even the swimming pretends to be nature.

Picking a room means picking a mood. The thirteen in the manor have creaking parquet and views of the trees, and they are worth asking for early by anyone after a dose of history. The rest are in the farm buildings and the cabins, where pale wood meets flea-market finds. Their names come from the surrounding countryside, such as the Bees' Barn, and the bees are real: their honey turns up in the restaurant.

The signature suite is called Le Baron Perché, the French title of Italo Calvino's novel about a young nobleman who, after a family row over a plate of snails, climbs a tree and refuses ever to come down. The suite stands above the pond, with orchard views from the terrace and a private Nordic bath. After an evening up there, the baron's decision seems entirely reasonable.

Evenings end at L'Auberge, a big stone room with old beams and long wooden tables, where chickens turn slowly on the spit beside the fire. In season, wild mushrooms come baked in a tart. Guests who spent the day stomping through the woods in their borrowed boots may arrive with a pocketful of their own finds, and then, very sensibly, let the chef do the picking.

The obvious outing is a bike ride to the château of Cheverny, which Hergé borrowed for Captain Haddock's Marlinspike Hall. Most days, its hundred or so hunting hounds are fed in front of visitors, and the meal is gone in about the time it takes to raise a phone. Children tend to rank this well above the tapestries. Les Sources is made for families like theirs, and for couples who prefer their châteaux with a walk in the woods attached, as long as nobody minds Loire prices with a Bordeaux accent. The hotel closes in January.

When guests leave, the boots tend to come back caked in forest. Most grand hotels would frown at that. Here it is a compliment to the house.

In the vines

With the winemaker Philippe Tessier, the estate has planted seven hectares of Romorantin, the old white grape of Cour-Cheverny, farmed organically within the property.

The château rooms

Château du Breuil, the old manor of the estate, holds rooms and suites furnished with vintage finds and the estate's own antique pieces, some with panelling and fireplaces, in shades of leaf and bark green. Views are of the forest or the gardens. This is the building for anyone who wants a country house rather than a cabin.

Le Baron Perché

The signature suite is a cabin of solid timber raised on stilts above the lake, with a tower that looks over the hamlet, the orchards and the water. Inside, a large double bed and a sofa share one open space; outside, the private terrace holds a Nordic bath. It sleeps two and is the only suite of its kind on the estate.

The outdoor pool

The long outdoor pool lies among the trees, edged with stone paving and a row of loungers, and it is heated. It is kept for hotel guests and needs no booking. Out of season there is still the round hot tub made from an oak barrel, open all year, and the indoor relaxation pool at the Caudalie spa.

L'Auberge

L'Auberge is the everyday table, open for lunch and dinner every day: stone walls, a large fireplace, a rotisserie and an open kitchen in white tiles, with solid wood tables and mismatched plates. The cooking stays local, with vegetables from a market gardener in Mont-près-Chambord, Sologne strawberries and Touraine pork roasted by the fire. In summer the tables move out under a pergola.

Why this one

  1. A cabin by the lake.

The Hameau du Marais, in pale wood.

  2. The rotisserie every night.

    L'Auberge opens every day.

  3. Boots and bikes on loan.

The forest starts at the door.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Château, hamlet or farmhouse.

The 49 rooms and suites are spread over several buildings, and the building sets the mood more than the category. Château du Breuil has panelling, antique furniture and shades of leaf green; the Hameau du Marais is a cluster of pale-wood, Scandinavian-style cabins by the lake; the Maison des Fleurs, the Maison des Fruits and the Grange aux Abeilles sit near the orchard. Anyone after history should ask for the château, anyone after light and wood for the hamlet.

  2. Suites for families, one suite for two.

Families are well provided for. A Junior Suite sleeps two adults and a child, with the sitting area open to the bedroom; a Suite takes up to four, with a sofa bed in a living room behind a door, and an extra fully equipped kitchen can be added for a charge when available. Le Baron Perché is the opposite case: a single suite for two adults only, so a couple who want it should book it first and build the dates around it.

  3. Two restaurants, two rhythms.

L'Auberge serves lunch and dinner every day and is where most evenings happen, with a children's menu and, in summer, a pergola terrace in the garden. Le Favori, chef Pierre Frindel's gastronomic restaurant, serves dinner from Wednesday to Sunday and lunch only at weekends. A stay over Monday and Tuesday therefore has L'Auberge as its only dining room those nights; anyone travelling for Le Favori should reserve that dinner before choosing the nights.

  4. Outdoor season, indoor spa.

Much of the pleasure here is outdoors, so the dates matter. The heated outdoor pool opens from mid-April to October, weather permitting, for hotel guests only. The oak-barrel hot tub and the tennis court work all year, and the bikes and boots are always on loan. The Caudalie spa, with its relaxation pool and hammam, admits guests from sixteen, with a treatment or a two-hour session booked ahead, so younger children swim outdoors or not at all.

The price question

The money buys space and an outdoor life: a forest estate with a lake, cabins, a château, a seasonal pool, bikes and boots, and a restaurant open every day. It does not buy a grand château stay throughout: many rooms are in the cabins and houses rather than the château, the outdoor pool closes for the winter, and the spa has an age limit. The comparison is with Les Sources de Caudalie at Bordeaux prices, not with a Loire village inn.

What the money buys

  • A choice between château rooms, lakeside cabins and suites that sleep four.
  • L'Auberge every day, with Le Favori on five evenings a week.
  • Bikes, Aigle boots, tennis and a hot tub, all on loan or open to guests.

What it leaves out

  • An outdoor pool between November and mid-April.
  • Spa access for anyone under sixteen.
  • A way to arrive without a car or a booked transfer.

Who it suits

Book it for a family weekend or a couple's stay of two or three nights between spring and autumn, with bikes for the Château de Cheverny and one dinner at Le Favori fixed in advance. Travellers without a car, or a couple wanting a grand château interior throughout, are better placed elsewhere in the Loire.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Les Sources de Caudalie

The sister house of Les Sources de Cheverny, opened by Alice and Jérôme Tourbier in 1999 among the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation south of Bordeaux.

  • Fleur de Loire

Chef Christophe Hay's hotel in Blois, with his restaurant and a Sisley spa, about half an hour's drive from Cheverny.
