In some homes, the visit begins with a small ritual at the door. The shoes come off, and with them goes some of the stiffness of being a guest. Nobody walks in socks through a showroom, so the gesture says that the house expects to be lived in. At Maison Aribert, in the old spa town of Uriage above Grenoble, the same ritual opens a stay shaped by the chef Christophe Aribert and the mountains he grew up in.

Aribert grew up in the mountains of Isère, in a family of farmers and innkeepers, and after two decades in the kitchen of a grand hotel down the road he opened a place of his own. His restaurant is a bright room of glass and timber beside a nineteenth-century chalet in the wooded park of Uriage, facing the trees, with a vegetable garden run on permaculture principles on its roof. His guests sleep in the chalet and in a second house a few steps away, which works like a family home, with a kitchen and a lounge to share downstairs.

Upstairs, the bedrooms are few and calm. Rounded shapes and the colours of bark and leaves keep the eye at rest, while handmade Hästens beds make an early night hard to resist. Showers look out at the trees. No television hangs on the wall, and the silence is deliberate. A few more rooms in the old chalet have terraces above the park.

Barefoot is how the house is meant to be explored. Downstairs, a quiet basement holds hot and cold basins with windows onto the greenery, and massages and yoga can be booked. Outside, the mountains close in on every side. Belledonne rises behind the village and the Vercors faces it across the valley, and in winter the ski slopes of Chamrousse are close by. Guests can even arrive by train, via Grenoble.

The shoes go back on for dinner, though the dining room hardly asks for ceremony. Aribert cooks the region rather than the world, drawing on his own garden and on the Alpine lakes. A perch from Lake Geneva may arrive with char eggs and a touch of Chartreuse, and the meal can close with a tart of Grenoble walnuts. Breakfast the next day is generous enough to argue for a second night.

The house asks a little of its guests. Rooms are so scarce that dates fill fast, and the restaurant does not open every day, so a stay needs planning around it. Swimmers will find no pool and only a modest spa, and Uriage is quiet after dark. Maison Aribert is for gourmets who care where their dinner grows, and for any couple overdue a reset. One night is enough for a dinner, two leave time for the mountains. Autumn brings mushrooms, and summer is the garden's season.

In most homes, taking the shoes off is a courtesy. At Maison Aribert it is the first sign of a stay that slows down from the feet up.

Five totems

The sculptor Thierry Marthenon, who works in the Chartreuse, carved five totems for the house from plane trees felled during the building work, one for each continent.

The glass dining room

The restaurant is not in the old chalet itself but in a single-storey building of glass and timber attached to it, half set into the slope and roofed with plants and vegetable beds. The wooden screen over the glass opens fully in fine weather, the kitchen is open to the room, and one table stands inside it.

The Maison du Chef

The second guesthouse stands a few steps from the main house, at the edge of the park, reached along a path planted with aromatic herbs. Its four rooms share a kitchen and a lounge with a record player and a shelf of vinyl, and a terraced garden laid out as a trail of plants climbs beside the house.

A room among the trees

Each room has a sleeping area and a separate sitting corner furnished with vintage and contemporary pieces, a Hästens double bed of 160 by 200 cm and tall windows onto the park. There is no television; tablets with streaming subscriptions are brought on request, and the herbal-tea room stays open day and night.

Hot water, cold water

Below the Maison du Chef, a 50 m² room with terracotta and ochre walls holds two basins sunk into the floor, one hot and one cold, for alternating immersion. Large glass bays look onto the park. There is a changing room with lockers, a shower and a massage area, and guests may book the room for themselves alone.

Why this one

  1. A table in the kitchen.

One table sits inside the open kitchen.

  2. Basins below the rooms.

Hot and cold water, windows onto the park.

  3. Beds without screens.

    Hästens beds and no televisions.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. Main house or Maison du Chef.

The nine rooms are split between two buildings a few steps apart. The five in the nineteenth-century main house fill its main floor, and the hotel's room page gives each a large terrace with armchairs; the library and the herbal-tea room, open day and night, are close by. The four in the Maison du Chef are built around a tree theme, with walk-in showers, and share a kitchen, a lounge and a record player, directly above the hot and cold basins. Ask for the house when booking.

  2. Book the table before the room.

The gastronomic restaurant opens five days a week and never on Monday or Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday it serves dinner only, on Friday and Saturday lunch and dinner, and on Sunday lunch only; a lunch menu is served only on Friday. One menu is served to the whole table. A stay of Sunday and Monday nights leaves only Café A for dinner, which opens every day. Fix the restaurant date first and build the nights around it.

  3. Basins, not a spa.

There is no pool and no spa in the usual sense. The wellness room is 50 m² in the foundations of the Maison du Chef: two sunken basins, one hot and one cold, a changing room with lockers, a shower, benches and a massage area, with windows onto the park. House guests use it as they wish or reserve it privately. Massages with the resident practitioners and yoga or Pilates classes are booked through the reservation team ahead of arrival.

  4. Arriving without a car.

Uriage lies 12 km from Grenoble, and the hotel gives Grenoble station as the rail stop, 18 km away, with a local taxi number on its access page. Lyon-Saint-Exupéry airport is about an hour by road, Grenoble-Alpes-Isère about 45 minutes. Drivers have private parking at the hotel. In winter the Chamrousse ski area rises directly above the village, and hiking, snowshoeing or guided outings in Belledonne and the Vercors are arranged by the house concierge.

The price question

The money buys a night a short walk from Christophe Aribert's dining room, in a guesthouse of nine rooms where the beds are Hästens and the screens are left out. It does not buy hotel scale: there is no pool, the wellness room is a single space of basins, and the restaurant closes two days a week. The real comparison is one dinner here plus a night in Grenoble.

What the money buys

  • A room a few steps from the restaurant, with no drive after dinner.
  • Use of the hot and cold basins in the Maison du Chef.
  • A library and herbal-tea room open day and night.

What it leaves out

  • A pool, a sauna or a spa with treatment rooms.
  • Gastronomic dinner on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.
  • Room for pets, which are not admitted.

Who it suits

Book it for one or two nights built around a dinner between Wednesday and Saturday, with the house chosen to match: the main house for a terrace, the Maison du Chef for the basins and the shared kitchen. A long ski holiday or a family that needs a pool is better placed elsewhere.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Le Coucou Méribel

A contemporary chalet hotel at the foot of the slopes in Méribel, with three restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools and a spa by Tata Harper.

  • Le Moulin de l'Abbaye

A former mill on the river at Brantôme in the Périgord, facing the abbey, with rooms in three houses, a restaurant with a terrace and two bistros nearby.
