The gardenis spoken for.

The door at 3 rue Christine opens onto a covered passage, and the passage onto a paved courtyard, with ivy on the walls and swings hanging in it. Just inside are the lounges, with fireplaces and an honour bar, open at every hour; breakfast is laid out there until eleven, or brought upstairs whenever it is wanted. With forty-eight rooms, a third as many as the Ritz, the Relais Christine is a small and quiet house, and these shared rooms do much of its work.

They have to, because there is no restaurant. It is a compromise, and a well-managed one. The hotel has a menu of its own for the lounges and for room service, which runs through the night, and at lunch and dinner it also offers the menus of its two neighbours on the street: an inventive kitchen next door at number 1, where a young chef cooks with ferments and smoke, and a bistro at number 9 that serves marrow bones and côte de bœuf. Beyond them lies Saint-Germain. Over a stay of several days the house becomes a base for eating out, and the concierge, the part of the staff recent guests praise most, is where the tables come from.

The rooms are the compromise the house cannot manage away. They run from 19 square metres to 25, and recent guests, contented ones included, describe them as small, with little room for luggage. In most categories the side a room faces is a matter of request, and it changes the stay. On the street, the windows look across a quiet lane at a small cinema that shows Hollywood classics; on the courtyard, they look into the ivy, and courtyard rooms are the ones recent guests recommend. For more than a night or two, the suites, 40 to 56 square metres with two bathrooms and a sitting room, face one or the other. At these prices, a week in a 19-square-metre room is a poor use of the money.

The garden is another matter, and most guests will see it, if at all, from a window. It lies behind the house, about 150 square metres of planting that supplies the honey at breakfast, and it is closed: four rooms have a terrace onto it, two of them the Garden Suites. The smallest rooms, the 19-square-metre Cosy category, are the ones sold on the garden side; the largest suites never face it. For a guest who wants both the flowers and the floor space there is one sure answer, a Garden Suite of 40 square metres with its own terrace, and the house has only two.

Four terraces

The garden behind the house belongs to four rooms.

Through the passage

Behind the door and a covered passage, the courtyard every guest walks through: paving, ivy and swings.

At every hour

The lounges never close. Breakfast is laid here until eleven; after that, the honour bar.

Across the lane

On the street side, a quiet lane and a small cinema that shows Hollywood classics.

Spoken for

Four rooms have a terrace onto the garden. Two of them are the Garden Suites.

Why this one

  1. A house that never closes.

Lounges with fireplaces and an honour bar at every hour, room service through the night, breakfast upstairs whenever you want it.

  2. Saint-Germain at the door.

The menus of the two kitchens on the street at lunch and dinner, the Seine a few minutes away, and a concierge guests praise for the tables it finds.

  3. Quiet, on a lane.

A side street with a small cinema opposite and a courtyard behind a door: a calm address in a busy quarter.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. The garden means a Garden Suite.

The garden is closed: four rooms have a terrace onto it, two of them the Garden Suites (40 m², two bathrooms, a sitting room). The Cosy rooms (19 m²) are sold on the garden side; the junior suites may face it; the Suites (40 to 56 m²) never do. If the garden is the reason for the trip, book a Garden Suite and confirm the terrace in writing.

  2. Ask for the courtyard.

Superior (22 m²) and Deluxe (25 m²) rooms may face the street, the courtyard or the garden, and the category does not fix the side. The courtyard side looks into the ivy and is the one recent guests recommend; the street side looks across rue Christine, a quiet lane, at a small cinema. Say which you want when you book.

  3. For a long stay, read the floor plan.

The Suites (40 to 56 m², up to four people) have two bathrooms and a sitting room, and one has a kitchen; one Deluxe Junior Suite has an outdoor sitting area and a kitchenette. The Duplex Junior Suite (30 m²) puts the bedroom on a loft above the bathroom: fine for a couple, less so for anyone who minds stairs at night.

  4. Book breakfast with the room, or plan to go out.

Breakfast is extra unless it is part of the rate when you book. The buffet runs from 7 to 11 in the lounges, and breakfast can be ordered to the room at any hour; otherwise the cafés of Saint-Germain are a few minutes away.

The price question

Relais Christine charges five-star prices for a quiet house in Saint-Germain: a courtyard, lounges and room service at every hour, the kitchens of its neighbours, a concierge who finds the tables, and a free garage. What it does not have to sell is space: the rooms are 19 to 25 square metres. For two people on a short stay who will spend their days in the city, that is a fair bargain. For a long stay it is fair only in a suite, and for anyone who wants a large room, a pool or an evening that happens downstairs, a palace answers the brief better.

What the house gives

  • Lounges, an honour bar and room service at every hour.
  • The menus of two neighbouring kitchens at lunch and dinner.
  • A quiet lane and a courtyard behind the door.
  • Free valet parking in a private garage.

Where it falls short

  • Space: rooms of 19 to 25 m².
  • The garden, for all but four rooms.
  • A dining room or a pool.
  • Wi-Fi to match the rest: a repeated small complaint.

Who it suits

Couples on a short stay who mean to eat out, returning visitors to Saint-Germain, travellers arriving by car, and families in a Suite, which takes four.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Mandarin Oriental Lutetia

The Left Bank's palace on the boulevard Raspail, with entry rooms of about 30 m², restaurants in the house and an indoor pool: for space, and an evening that happens downstairs.

  • Saint James Paris

The same owners' château in the 16th arrondissement, behind its own wall and garden, with a pool and a Michelin-starred restaurant: for a garden and a dining room, at the price of distance from the Left Bank.

How the grade is made

The Edit score is the editor's grade for the level of the hotel, out of ten. It weighs what the outside judges say (Michelin Keys, Forbes Travel Guide, World's 50 Best Hotels, Atout France palace status, La Liste), what changed in the last two years and what guests write now; where these and the editor's own judgement disagree, the editor decides. A spa with a pool worth booking for adds up to two tenths.
