Rosewood has managed to turn a philosophy into a registered trademark. A Sense of Place, complete with its little ®, promises a hotel that could belong nowhere else. That promise has now reached Courchevel 1850, a resort where every grand address already has a role: the fairytale, the fashion house, the Himalayan expedition. What was a newcomer supposed to be? A ski hotel with a sense of place is a fine ambition. In Courchevel, finding an identity not already taken is almost an extreme sport.
The answer begins with the building. Tristan Auer has kept the quartzite-and-timber façade quiet among the trees of the Jardin Alpin, while inside, copper fireplace hoods, velvet, mirrors and warm timber borrow from the resort's younger, more glamorous history. Courchevel was built for skiing after the war; it did not inherit centuries of village life to reproduce at will. Auer wisely avoids inventing an ancient Savoyard château. What he has made is closer to a well-heeled private winter house, with just enough shine to admit what postcode it occupies.
Its fifty-one accommodations include three substantial houses, a distinction that matters when the party includes cousins, children and people who do not necessarily want the same breakfast. In the bedrooms the glamour is controlled; in the shared rooms it opens out towards the slopes. The families have their own arrangements too: Malamute encounters, an igloo and a chocolate fountain for children, who are unlikely to demand a more rigorous interpretation of local culture. The adults may quietly feel the same.
The strongest sense of place is found at the ski-room door. Rosewood's personal ski concierges can arrange first tracks, a dedicated instructor or coffee on the mountain at sunrise. All the velvet in Courchevel cannot compete with the moment the lifts are only beginning to turn and the snow ahead is unmarked. It makes a persuasive argument for choosing a hotel with real mountain knowledge rather than one that simply offers a mountain view. The remarkable thing is that the best experience requires leaving the building.
Afterwards there is SALTO, where Savoyard fondue at lunch gives way to a livelier evening, and Asaya, whose seventeen-metre pool, hot and cold water and treatment rooms make an excellent case for doing nothing energetic until tomorrow. The spa may be the most practical part of Rosewood's philosophy: after six hours on skis, your calves have a very clear sense of place. A house need not turn every moment into a grand gesture to make a stay feel expensive.
There are compromises. The village nightlife is not immediately outside the door, the prices place Rosewood among established competitors and the restaurant, spa and club are still developing their own rituals. It is a polished opening, not yet a hotel with generations of stories behind it. But there is pleasure in that uncertainty. Courchevel has enough palaces whose guests already know exactly which sofa they want. This one has room for its own habits to form.
A sense of place can be registered at the trademark office. A place in Courchevel cannot. That has to be earned on the mountain, one winter at a time, and Rosewood has only just clipped in.
In the hall
Olafur Eliasson's installation Two harmonious yet different crystals sharing views and reflection hangs two crystalline forms among mirrored walls and ceilings, so that they seem to repeat into infinity.
A terrace facing the pistes
The Grand Premier Room is the smallest category described with a terrace over the slopes and mountains: 43 m², a super king bed and an enlarged dressing area. The Premier Room below it is a 40 m² corner room with two terraces, while Deluxe and Grand Deluxe rooms look over the forest or the chalets. For a skier, the view decides the category.
Saulire House
Three of the 51 keys are houses, and they differ widely. Saulire House has two bedrooms, high ceilings and five terraces towards the Saulire, 268 m² for up to six. Courchevel House fits four into 177 m² with four terraces. The Jardin Alpin Apartment, designed by Studio KO, has four bedrooms, a cinema room and a professional kitchen for eight.
SALTO by the fire
SALTO works in two registers. Skiers come in off the piste at lunch for Savoyard fondue, grilled meats and seafood on the panoramic terrace; in the evening chef Gioia Baek's menu turns to the cooking of the Italian Alps, with a wine list. The SALTO Lounge takes over for après-ski, with an in-house DJ, cocktails and a fire.
The Asaya pool
Asaya's indoor pool is 17 metres long, finished in ceramics that take their cue from the snow outside. Around it are two saunas and steam rooms, a hot tub, a cold plunge and an experience shower, five treatment rooms and a suite with its own hot tub. Non-residents book treatments only; under-sixteens need an adult with them.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Plan the morning, not only the room.
The ski concierges are the reason to choose this address over a grander salon. They arrange first tracks, the first lines on Courchevel's pistes before the day begins, with a dedicated instructor; coffee on the piste as the sun rises over Mont Blanc; and a wardrobe of skiwear ordered before arrival. These are arrangements, not standing inclusions, and the hotel lists no prices or schedules for them, so ask at booking which mornings can be reserved and what the instructor's time covers.
02
Slope side or village side.
The categories differ by what they face. Deluxe and Grand Deluxe rooms look over the forest or the village chalets, and so do the Junior Suite and the standard Family Room. The Grand Premier Room, the Premier Junior Suite, the Family Room Slopes and the Two Bedroom Signature Suite are the ones described with views over the slopes, the last also towards the Saulire. For a skier who wants to watch the pistes from the terrace, the category name settles it, not a request at check-in.
03
Families pay from age three.
Children aged three and over count as adults for pricing; a cot is free below that. For four, the Family Room joins a Deluxe and a Premier Room (69 m², forest and chalet views) and the Family Room Slopes joins two rooms facing the pistes (68 m²). The Deluxe Junior Suite adds a sofa bed for up to two children. The Kids Club runs Malamute encounters and an igloo with a chocolate fountain; in the pool and spa, under-sixteens need an adult with them.
04
Read the deposit terms first.
Reservations are guaranteed by card, and half of the stay is taken as a deposit when the booking is confirmed. A cancellation more than 120 days before arrival still forfeits half of the reservation amount; inside 120 days the whole deposit is lost. Group bookings, offers and some dates carry their own terms. For a family whose plans depend on school holidays or snow, settle the dates before booking, and insure the trip rather than counting on a late change.
The price question
The money buys a new building on the Jardin Alpin with the slope at the door, a ski concierge who can put a skier on an empty piste before the day begins, and a 17-metre pool for the afternoon. It does not buy history, a village street outside or flexibility: the hotel opened in December 2025, and the deposit and cancellation terms are strict.
What the money buys
Ski-in ski-out access, ski butlers and a full-service ski shop in the hotel.
First tracks with a dedicated instructor, arranged by a personal ski concierge.
Rooms with terraces, from a 29 m² Deluxe Room to houses for up to eight.
What it leaves out
Slope views in every category: several look over forest or chalets.
Lenient cancellation: half the reservation is forfeited even 120 days out.
A track record: the first winter was 2025-26.
Who it suits
Book it for a week of skiing in which the mornings matter more than the evenings, in a Grand Premier Room or a slope-facing family category, with the concierge briefed on first tracks before arrival. A group that wants the village's nightlife on the doorstep, or a family that may need to move its dates late, is better placed elsewhere.
Who should spend elsewhere
Cheval Blanc Courchevel
36 keys, including an Apartment and a chalet, with ski-in ski-out access in Courchevel 1850; restaurants Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc, La Terrasse and Le Grill Alpin, and a Guerlain spa.
Airelles Courchevel
44 rooms and suites on the Jardin Alpin in Courchevel 1850, with half and full board, ski valets, a La Mer spa and a Winter Camp with its own ice rink.
