What's in a name? Juliet thought a rose would smell just as sweet by any other. The hotel business has spent years proving that names are worth quite a lot of money, and Six Senses is one of its most evocative: secluded coves, remote islands, barefoot tranquillity and a conscience to match. In Courchevel 1850, the same name hangs over a collection of privately owned apartments. There are no desert cliffs or coconut palms. There is a lift pass to organise, a family to get out of bed and, if things go well, a kitchen table big enough for everyone.

Its fifty-three apartments belong to individual owners, some of them available for short stays through the brand. A name that once described an escape from everyday life now sits above a very well-made version of it. The better question is what an apartment can do that a palace room cannot. The answer usually arrives before breakfast, when six people want six different things.

The residences range from smaller apartments to duplex penthouses with as many as five bedrooms. There are proper kitchens, living rooms in which the whole party can gather and, in selected homes, fireplaces, private hammams, cinema rooms and balcony hot tubs. A family can argue about tomorrow's skiing without conducting the meeting in a hotel corridor. Friends can open a bottle they brought with them, cook nothing at all and sit around a table long after a restaurant would have brought the bill. Privacy here is not a mystic state. It is a door you can close.

The skiing is organised almost as sensibly. A concierge handles equipment and transfers, while a dedicated lodge beside the lifts at La Croisette means guests need not march through town in ski boots. Breakfast and private catering can be arranged in the residence; Sumosan serves Japanese food downstairs. The advantage is not that somebody has invented a new way to ski. It is that nobody has to be in the same place at the same time, except perhaps when the group finally gets hungry.

At the spa, the name earns its place on the door. There is an indoor pool, an outdoor hot tub, a Kneipp foot bath, steam and sauna, and an Alchemy Bar where guests make their own blends. Five treatment rooms are modest by the standards of a sprawling Six Senses resort, but after a day on snow they make very good sense. The brand's softer conscience is present too: Monty, a toy chamois, appears in the residences, with proceeds from sales supporting environmental and community projects. Even a cuddly mountain goat has a job to do.

What this isn't is a full-service resort spread over a landscape. There are no grounds to wander, no succession of grand public rooms and less sense of a shared hotel society than at the palaces higher up the mountain. The price can be steep for an apartment, however beautifully staffed, and service arrangements are worth checking when the home belongs to somebody else. Yet for a multigenerational family or a group of friends, those limitations may matter less than having an actual home for the week. Space does not need to pretend to be spiritual to be a luxury.

Juliet may have been right about the rose. Call this place Six Senses, a residence or simply a very good apartment: the best part is that everyone can leave their boots beside the same door.

On the sofa

Every residence has Monty, a soft-toy chamois. Proceeds from sales go to the Six Senses Regenerative Impact Fund, which supports One Tree at a Time and Ma Chance Moi Aussi.

A table for the whole party

Every category comes with a fully equipped kitchen and a dining table in the living space, so meals need not be booked anywhere. This is the Two-Bedroom Apartment with a courtyard view: 65 to 83 m² for four, two bathrooms with showers, a balcony and views over the inner courtyard or the town. A private chef can be arranged for the same table.

A balcony facing the peaks

Balconies and terraces come with every category, and the view depends on the apartment: mountain, valley, street or inner courtyard. The Three-Bedroom Prestige Family Apartment, 97 to 122 m² for six, looks over the mountains and the courtyard. The category covers three apartments, each with a bunk-bed room for children and a different mix of double, twin and single beds.

The ski lodge at La Croisette

Skis and boots do not live in the apartment. They are kept at the residences' own lodge by the La Croisette lifts, dried on heated racks and laid out each morning, with a technician on hand. The shuttle runs between the residences and the lodge all day, and ski instructors meet their pupils there. Equipment can be reserved in advance at the on-site Skiset shop.

The pool under the timber waves

The spa's ceiling of curved timber was designed after the shapes of snow waves. Around the heated indoor pool and its relaxation area are an outdoor hot tub, a vitality area with sauna, bio sauna, steam room, rain shower and Kneipp foot bath, five treatment rooms, a juice bar and the Alchemy Bar. Children have their own menu; evenings are reserved for adults.

Why this one

  1. A kitchen table for ten.

Up to five bedrooms under one roof.

  2. Boots left at the lifts.

A ski lodge at La Croisette.

  3. A spa downstairs.

Indoor pool, hot tub, Kneipp bath.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. What Six Senses runs, and what the owner chose.

The apartments belong to individual owners and are let through a rental programme run by the brand. Six Senses supplies the services: a concierge and Guest Experience Maker around the clock, daily housekeeping, the shuttle, the ski lodge, the spa and babysitting on request. The apartment itself, with its bed layout, view, bathroom fittings and any fireplace or hot tub, is the owner's. Only the four- and five-bedroom Prestige homes include a personal Guest Experience Maker of their own.

  2. Ask which apartment, not only which category.

A category name covers several different homes. The Three-Bedroom Prestige Family Apartment is three apartments, with bunk beds in each but a different mix of doubles, twins and singles. Of the two Four-Bedroom Prestige Residences only one has a fireplace and only one is a duplex. The hot tub comes with the Five-Bedroom Prestige Residence, the cinema room with the Penthouse. Sizes within a category differ by as much as 31 m², so the exact unit is worth confirming before paying the deposit.

  3. The lodge is at the lifts, not downstairs.

The residences stand in the village; skiing starts from the lodge at La Croisette, which the shuttle reaches throughout the day. Boots, skis and poles stay there overnight, dried on heated racks and prepared each morning by a technician. Equipment can be reserved at the on-site Skiset shop before arrival. For children, the instructors of Oxygene and First Tracks meet at the lodge, beside the gondola and the button lift to the beginners' slopes; in February, book lessons well ahead.

  4. Groups, meals and the small print.

Five apartments or more count as a group booking, with separate terms from the reservations team, so a wedding party or several families should ask for an offer rather than book online. There is no hotel dining room: breakfast comes as a hamper, dinner at Sumosan, from a private chef or as a take-away. Babysitting and nannies must be requested before arrival. The spa is adults-only in the evening, and spa credits count only for treatments taken in a midday window.

The price question

The money buys an apartment large enough for a family or a group of friends, a kitchen and a living room, with hotel services around it: a concierge at any hour, daily housekeeping, a lodge at the lifts and a spa. It does not buy a hotel. There is no restaurant run by the house, no public rooms or grounds, and each apartment is fitted out by its owner, so two homes in the same category are not the same stay.

What the money buys

  • Two to five bedrooms, a full kitchen and a balcony or terrace in every category.
  • A ski lodge at La Croisette, with lockers, heated boot racks and a shuttle.
  • Access to the spa, with its indoor pool, outdoor hot tub and Kneipp foot bath.

What it leaves out

  • A hotel restaurant or bar of its own; Sumosan is run and booked separately.
  • Fireplace, hot tub or cinema in every home: they come with particular apartments.
  • A season outside winter: the residences open from December to the end of April.

Who it suits

Book it for a ski week with three generations, or a group of six to ten friends who want to eat together at home, with the apartment chosen by name and the lodge doing the work of the boot room. A couple wanting one room, a dining room downstairs and a bar in the evening is better placed in a hotel.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Cheval Blanc Courchevel

36 keys, including an Apartment and a chalet, with ski-in ski-out access in Courchevel 1850; restaurants Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc, La Terrasse and Le Grill Alpin, and a Guerlain spa. Reopens on 4 December 2026.

  • Airelles Courchevel

44 rooms and suites, 15 of them suites, in the Jardin Alpin of Courchevel 1850, open in winter only; half board as the standard rate, a La Mer spa and a Winter Camp for children with its own ice rink.
