  • 301 hectares of estate
  • 115 suites and villas
  • 3,200 m² of spa

Three hundred hectares,no shoreline.

Provence, France43°35′ N 6°44′ E

On the Riviera, luxury is often measured in metres from the sea. Terre Blanche measures it in hectares. Its 301 hectares of pine-covered hills near Tourrettes are larger than Monaco, and the drive from the gate to the hotel makes the comparison feel less fanciful than it sounds. The coast is there, beyond the hills, but nobody has arranged the place around reaching it quickly. Here, the first extravagance is having somewhere to spread out.

All 115 places to sleep are suites or villas scattered among low Provençal buildings rather than stacked behind a hotel corridor. The smallest suites are sixty square metres, with separate living space and a terrace. Larger villas offer another level of privacy, some with their own pools. The style is warm and comfortable rather than particularly fashionable, and the views take in trees and hills instead of yachts. There is no inferior back-of-house view to apologise for; the countryside is the point of the room.

The distances change the rhythm of a day. A buggy carries guests between breakfast, the spa, the pools and the restaurants, and the short rides through the grounds are a reminder of how far apart things have been allowed to stand. The spa has an entire building and more than three thousand square metres for treatments and water. An infinity pool looks across the valley. It is easy to imagine never setting foot outside the gates, which is both the attraction and a fair description of the resort's scale.

Golf has its own kingdom here: two eighteen-hole courses and an academy serious enough for people planning a holiday around a swing. Yet the estate does not insist that everyone become a golfer. A couple can spend the morning in the spa, children can head for the club, and three generations can meet for lunch without having organised the same day. The luxury is not having to negotiate every activity as a family committee.

In the evening the landscape makes its best argument. The villages of the Pays de Fayence appear across the valley, with the light changing over the wooded slopes. Le Faventia gives the occasion a Michelin-starred dinner; Le Gaudina is the more relaxed hotel table, and Les Caroubiers looks over the eighteenth hole from the clubhouse. None of these meals needs a sea view to feel thoroughly southern French. The pleasure is arriving without having spent the day travelling to find one.

Such room comes at a price beyond the bill. A car remains useful for markets, villages and the coast; a buggy is convenient until several people want one at once. The main pool and family facilities can feel busy in school holidays, while the estate's generous dimensions do not guarantee that every restaurant will be open on every date. Golf is also the dominant language of much of the property, even for guests who never pick up a club.

There is an old idea that the best Riviera hotel should place the sea at your feet. Terre Blanche is a persuasive counterargument. It offers no shore, only a valley, a remarkable amount of land and the unfamiliar sensation of being able to spend a whole day without running out of room.

The quieter course

Le Riou, one of the two 18-hole courses, is reserved for club members, their guests and hotel guests.

Fairways in the forest

Golf fills much of the 301 hectares, laid out by Dave Thomas between woodland, reeds and water. Le Château, the longer course at 6,616 m, takes its name from the Château Bouge, visible from several holes. Beyond the greens, the hill villages of the Pays de Fayence close the horizon, the same outlook the hotel lists for every room.

Inside a Suite Premier

The Suite Premier, 60 m² like the Suite Deluxe, is the entry category set up for a family: its separate sitting room has a sofa bed and can serve as a second bedroom, and the bedroom takes a king or twin queen beds. A 20 m² terrace opens onto the woods. Coco-Mat bedding, an espresso machine and a bath beside an Italian shower complete it.

The spa's indoor pool

The spa occupies its own ochre bastide, and at its centre lies a heated 20 m pool between white columns under a skylight, used for lengths as well as rest. Outside, the Vitality Pool is kept at 33°C with jets and bubble beds. Non-residents can book, so the spa is not reserved for the hotel; under-13s are not admitted at all.

The pool of the Villa Terre Blanche

The largest of the villas, 300 m² with a main bedroom and two further suites, has a private pool and jacuzzi on the main bedroom's terrace, and three separate terraces in all. It sleeps up to nine adults, which makes it the estate's answer for a gathering of several households under one roof, with a view over wooded hills rather than the sea.

Why this one

  1. Space as standard.

    Suites start at 60 m².

  2. A course of its own.

Le Riou is for hotel guests and members.

  3. A spa with a building.

    3,200 m² with a 20 m pool.

The Edit Notes

What a booking site will not tell you.

  1. A season, not a year.

Terre Blanche closes in winter, and inside its season each table keeps its own calendar. Les Caroubiers at the clubhouse serves lunch all year; Le Gaudina runs from early spring into November; Le Tousco by the infinity pool is a summer restaurant; Le Faventia serves dinner only, on a shorter run centred on summer, and not every night. A stay booked around the gastronomic dinner in spring or late autumn should be checked against its published dates first, since the hotel can be open while the dining room is not.

  2. Pool, jacuzzi or neither.

Only two villa types have a private pool. The Villa Prestige Méditerranée, 100 m² and set back from the other villas, has a 12 m² pool with a counter-current, plus its own garden; the 300 m² Villa Terre Blanche has a pool and a jacuzzi. The two 200 m² villas, Estérel and Provence, offer a jacuzzi on the terrace instead. The Villa Premier, also 100 m², has a 40 m² terrace and no water of its own. Size alone does not reveal which villa has a pool.

  3. What the room key opens on the course.

The two courses are not equally open. Le Château, the longer at 6,616 m with water hazards and views of the Château Bouge that gives it its name, takes outside green-fee players with a handicap index below 36. Le Riou, 6,005 m of rolling fairways, is kept for club members, their guests and hotel guests. Beginners without a handicap belong at the academy first: its Carte Verte course prepares players for the card French clubs ask for before an unaccompanied round.

  4. Thirteen is the line.

The spa admits adults and teenagers from 13, while the Kids' Club, Le Royaume des Enfants, is built for children aged 2 to 12, with activities and a meal included for hotel guests; older children may use it only when places allow. A twelve-year-old therefore sits between the two. The Kids' Club opens only at weekends early in the season, and in summer Le Pitchoun, a restaurant for resident children aged 2 to 12, runs beside Le Tousco.

The price question

The money buys space that the coast cannot sell at any price: 60 m² as the starting point, a second golf course that outsiders cannot simply book, and a spa large enough to fill a day. It does not buy the sea, a winter stay, or certainty of the gastronomic dinner, which keeps a shorter season than the hotel. Its real competitor is not a beach hotel but a Provençal hill estate with fewer suites and less golf.

What the money buys

  • Access to Le Riou, the 18-hole course closed to outside green-fee players.
  • A minimum of 60 m², with a separate sitting room and a 20 m² terrace.
  • A 3,200 m² spa with a 20 m indoor pool and an outdoor Vitality Pool at 33°C.

What it leaves out

  • Any sea or beach: every category is listed with a nature view.
  • A winter season: the hotel closes, and Le Faventia's dinner season is shorter still.
  • A private pool outside two villa types; the 200 m² villas have a jacuzzi instead.

Who it suits

Book it for a golf-centred week, or for a family that wants a Kids' Club for the younger children and a spa for the adults, without crossing a town to reach either. A couple who want the coast on foot or a hotel that stays open in January will be better served elsewhere.

Who should spend elsewhere

  • Château Saint-Martin & Spa

On Avenue des Templiers above Vence: rooms, suites and six Provençal villas on an olive-covered hillside, with a La Prairie spa, four restaurants and a pool bar.

  • Le Domaine du Mas de Pierre

Near the ramparts of Saint-Paul-de-Vence: 76 rooms and suites in nine Provençal bastides, about eight hectares of garden and a 2,000 m² spa.
