Claridge's, The Connaught and The Berkeley are London landmarks. High above Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the same hotel group has tried something that would look rather strange on a London street: a building of glass and pale stone set into a cliff, with the Mediterranean filling almost every line of sight. The Maybourne Riviera is what happens when a formidable tradition of hospitality takes its jacket off. The manners remain, even if the architecture has forgotten the tie.
Jean-Michel Wilmotte's building steps down the rock towards the sea. Its sixty-five suites and studios all have Mediterranean views and their own outdoor space, an exceptionally generous starting point before anyone has chosen an upgrade. Monaco rises across the water; on a clear day the coastline carries the eye towards Italy. The rooms are bright, contemporary and sometimes almost gallery-like, the opposite of the layered old-world decoration at the group's London houses. The view is not a prize reserved for a handful of named suites. It belongs to the whole hotel.
The sea is far below, so a day here has two levels. At the top there is an infinity pool, terraces and a choice of restaurants, including Jean-Georges Vongerichten's abc kitchens Riviera and the more Mediterranean Riviera Restaurant. Down at the shore, La Môme Riviera brings a different tempo to lunch, with sand, music and the easy noise of a beach club. A hotel shuttle connects the two. The journey down the hill is part of the geography, though never quite the same as stepping straight onto the beach.
The other destination is Surrenne Riviera. Across three floors, the wellbeing club offers serious treatment rooms, movement studios, a gym and contrast therapies that move between sauna, steam and cold water. Its programmes can be as structured as a guest wants them to be. For residents, access to the facilities is included, as are breakfast and regular transfers to Monaco and the beach, subject to the hotel's booking conditions. These details matter on a cliff.
The shuttle also makes an evening in Monaco surprisingly straightforward. A night among the principality's restaurants and bars can end with a return to a terrace high above them, without having to sleep in the middle of the spectacle. The Maybourne's great strength is not simply its outlook but the way a stay can move between serious wellness, ambitious cooking and the noisy waterfront, with the hotel taking care of much of the movement.
It is not an intimate Riviera villa. Weddings and events are part of the programme, and the modern building's long terraces give some areas a rather public feeling. The approach is steep, the private plunge pools attached to certain suites are for cooling off rather than swimming, and a hotel at this price must make its service consistently as impressive as its architecture. The design will feel exhilarating to some and a little cool to others. And for all the sea below, the beach still requires a ride.
A remarkable view can fill a room without making it a remarkable hotel. At The Maybourne Riviera, the generous space, the food, Surrenne and the easy connections down to the water do much of the rest. The group has taken off its jacket, but it has not forgotten how to look after a guest.
Diving-board beds
In the Infinity Blue Suite, Bryan O'Sullivan's bed frames are drawn as diving boards, a few steps from the suite's own infinity pool.
A Sea View Suite
Sea View Suites come with one or two bedrooms: 90 m² indoors with a 20 m² terrace, or 140 m² with 40 m² outside, both designed by Rigby & Rigby. The living room faces the sea through floor-to-ceiling glass. Suite rates add a sunset aperitif at Le 300 and, when the house allows, early arrival and late departure.
The pool against the rock
The infinity pool runs along a terrace cut into the cliff, with bare rock rising directly behind the loungers and the coast falling away in front. La Piscine, the poolside restaurant, serves pizzas and fresh juices in the shade. Two suite categories, Infinity Pool Duplex and Infinity Blue, repeat the idea on a private terrace with their own infinity plunge pool.
Riviera Restaurant, facing Monaco
The Riviera Restaurant terrace looks straight across at the towers of Monaco. Chef Guillaume Boumati cooks a seasonal Mediterranean carte with a menu of the week, and breakfast is served here when it is not taken in the suite. In season, dinner can move up to the top floor, where abc kitchens riviera serves Jean-Georges Vongerichten's vegetable-led Mediterranean menu.
Surrenne Riviera's open studio
Surrenne Riviera's group classes are designed with Lagree Fitness, on reformer machines lined up towards the sea. Two of its four studios, Waves and Riviera Reflections, have no windows and open straight onto the terrace; the Surrenne Gym and a one-to-one Performance Studio complete them. Michelle Wu designed the three floors in blues, with Travertine and Moleanos stone.

Why this one
01

From 15 m² up to 95 m².
02
Surrenne on three floors.
Included in the stay.
03
Monaco across the water.
And a shuttle to reach it.
The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Indoor metres, terrace metres.
The published sizes add terrace to interior, so read both figures. The Sea View Studio has 40 m² inside and 15 m² outside; the Panoramic Sea View Studio 50 m² and 15 m²; the Grand Sea View Studio 45 m² and 20 m². Panoramic gives more room indoors, Grand more terrace. The Surrenne Suite turns the ratio round: 45 m² inside, 70 m² outside, with a Jacuzzi, a Technogym bike and an infrared mat. Choose by where the day will be spent.
02
The rate is half a resort.
Every published stay includes Surrenne Riviera, English breakfast in the suite or at Riviera Restaurant, the shuttle to Monaco and to the beach club, beach loungers in summer subject to availability, a programme of classes and workshops, and a minibar of soft drinks and snacks. The asterisk matters: the arrival transfer from the Nice area and the welcome champagne do not apply to group or negotiated rates. Compare it with a room-only rate elsewhere plus spa, transfers and beach fees, not night against night.
03
Residents are not alone.
Surrenne Riviera sells a small number of seasonal memberships, and members' benefits include unlimited use of the infinity pool and privileged access to the beach club, although the pool page describes it as reserved for hotel guests. The hotel also hosts weddings on its lawn, cocktail receptions of up to 500 people, and full privatisation. For a quieter stay, a party can take a whole Private Floor of suites and studios, and two suite categories carry a pool of their own.
04
The beach is a separate outing.
La Môme Riviera, the beach club and restaurant, sits in a cove on Cap-Martin, well below the hotel, and works with the La Môme group's kitchen and its sunset DJ sets. It runs in summer only and is closed at present. The hotel's own aerial photograph shows terraces and loungers built on the rocks with a jetty into the water, rather than a long strip of sand. A swim in the sea means planning a shuttle; the everyday pool is the one on the cliff.
The price question
The money buys space and a structure: every category, down to a 40 m² studio, has its own terrace over the sea, and the rate carries breakfast, Surrenne Riviera's three floors, shuttles to Monaco and the beach, and classes. It does not buy a beach at the door, a village to walk into, or a hotel closed to outsiders. Pay for the terrace size that suits the stay, and treat the beach and Monaco as trips.
What the money buys
A sea view and a private terrace in all 65 suites and studios.
Surrenne Riviera, breakfast and the Monaco and beach shuttles in the published rate.
Riviera Restaurant, abc kitchens riviera on the top floor, La Piscine and Le 300 on one site.
What it leaves out
A beach on foot: La Môme Riviera is a shuttle ride down, in summer only.
Seclusion on event days: weddings, receptions for up to 500 and Surrenne members share the hotel.
A town outside the gate: Monaco and Roquebrune are reached by shuttle or car.
Who it suits
Book it for a few days that move between a morning class at Surrenne, the pool by day and an evening in Monaco, in a Grand or Panoramic studio or a suite with a large terrace. Look elsewhere for sand under the lounger, dinner within walking distance, or a quiet house on a wedding weekend.
Who should spend elsewhere
Monte-Carlo Beach
Also in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, at the water's edge on the Monaco side: 40 rooms and suites, an Olympic-size pool and a private beach.
Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel
At the tip of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat: 75 rooms, suites and villas in pine gardens, with the Club Dauphin seawater pool on the rocks.
