Across the inlet, facing the old town.

Odysseus was never a lucky traveller, but he had one good instinct. When his fleet sailed into a harbour ringed by sheer cliffs, he alone moored outside, and when the giants on the clifftops began pelting the ships with boulders, his was the only one that got away. Bonifacio likes to claim that harbour as its own, and Version Maquis Citadelle, a small hotel of twenty-two rooms on the hill opposite the old town, has clearly read the book. Low and modern, all timber decks and furniture in the khaki greens of the maquis, it keeps its distance and enjoys the view.
And what a view. The old town perches on a shelf of white limestone, its tall houses lined up along the very edge of the cliff as if daring each other to jump. Every room opens straight onto a private terrace, so each day begins with that skyline, or the wild scrub of the hillside, and then breakfast. Circe famously turned sailors into pigs. Corsica, being more practical, turns pigs into charcuterie, and the breakfast table is laden with it, alongside some seriously good waffles.
The pool is where the day goes missing. Twenty-eight metres long and aimed straight at the citadel, it invites one long swim towards the old town and a slow float back to the deck, after which the afternoon's plans quietly lapse.
Out at sea, the Lavezzi islands, a scatter of smooth granite and absurdly clear water, are a short boat ride away, and the hotel arranges the boat. It is the one outing worth getting up from the pool for.
Evenings are the real reason to stay on this side of the water. The bar beside the pool pours Corsican wine as the light softens over the cliffs, and dinner follows on the terrace while the windows of the old town blink on across the inlet. The kitchen is open to view and the cooking leans towards Italy, as Bonifacio itself did for centuries. The giants of Homer's harbour had peculiar ideas about dinner guests. Here, the worst fate awaiting anyone is a second dessert.
The strait of Bonifacio is famous for its wind, and on some days it blows hard enough to clear the pool deck. Those are the days when the spa, with its Russian banya and a second pool indoors, comes into its own. The mood is hushed and romantic, ideal for couples who want Bonifacio within reach but not underfoot. Children are welcome, though nobody would mistake it for a family resort. The port is a fair walk or a short ride away, and the hotel opens from May to October.
Odysseus had the right idea, moored outside with the best view of the cliffs. It is a pity he never got to enjoy it. He was rowing for his life at the time.
Own boats
The Version Maquis group keeps its own boats in the port of Bonifacio, an Itama 45S and a Capelli Tempest 1000, hired with a skipper for days out to the Lavezzi islands, Tizzano or the Costa Smeralda.
A terrace with every room
Whatever the category, the room opens onto a private terrace of 15 square metres, screened at the sides by timber louvres, with chairs, a table and a lounger. On the citadel-view side the old town sits on the horizon across the inlet; the garden-view rooms look over planted hillside and maquis instead. Breakfast can come here through room service.
La Vista after dark
Dinner moves onto the terrace beside the pool, with an Italian chef in the kitchen: house-made fresh pasta, local fish and meat. The terrace faces the citadel, and the restaurant also takes outside guests, so a table at dusk should be reserved. Earlier in the evening the bar serves cocktails and Corsican wines by the water.
The indoor pool
The spa covers 600 square metres: sauna, hammam, a Russian banya, an ice fountain and an indoor pool with water features behind floor-to-ceiling glass. Treatments use Biologique Recherche and the Corsican brand Isula. It is the fallback for a windy or grey afternoon, and a Technogym room and group yoga on several mornings complete it.
The suite with citadel view
The only category for more than two: 60 square metres, a king-size bed, two single beds for children on request, a bathtub and a private jacuzzi on the terrace. The hotel names three things on its horizon: the citadel, the sea and, on clear days, Sardinia. For families of four it is the one room that works.

The Edit Notes
What a booking site will not tell you.
01
Citadel view or garden view.
Superior and Deluxe rooms each come in two versions. The garden-view rooms look over the hotel's planted hillside and the maquis; the citadel-view rooms have the old town on the horizon across the inlet, the view the hotel is built around. The two categories differ by five square metres, and only Superior offers twin beds; Deluxe has a king-size bed. One citadel-view Superior is listed as accessible. Every room, whatever the view, has the same 15 m² terrace.
02
Four people means the suite.
The Suite with citadel view is the only category the hotel sells for more than two. It measures 60 m², has a bath and a private jacuzzi, adds two single beds for children on request, and looks towards the citadel, the sea and, on clear days, Sardinia. The other rooms take two adults and a baby cot. Children are welcome, but no children's club is listed, and a family of four that wants separate rooms needs two bookings.
03
Book La Vista, even as a resident.
The restaurant is open to non-residents, and the hotel itself advises booking a table online. In summer that means hotel guests share the terrace with diners from Bonifacio, so a dinner facing the old town at dusk is worth reserving on the day of arrival. On nights without a booking there are lighter routes: the pool menu in the afternoon, room service on the terrace, and small plates at the bar while the citadel catches the evening light.
04
The town is across the water.
The hotel stands on the hillside opposite the old town, not inside it, and lists no beach of its own. A hotel shuttle runs to the port, and electric mountain bikes are on loan for the maquis tracks. Days at sea start from the port on the group's own boats with a skipper, booked as an extra. Opening dates are not published on the official site, so stays at either end of the season should be confirmed before travel.
The price question
The stay buys the old town in full view from a quiet hillside, with Bonifacio a shuttle ride away rather than outside the door. It does not buy a beach or a street life: evenings in town mean the shuttle or a car, and days at sea are booked as extras on the group's boats. The real comparison is a room inside the walls, with its alleys and its noise, against this calm across the water.
What the money buys
A private 15 m² terrace with every room, in every category.
A 600 m² spa with banya, hammam, sauna and indoor pool for windy days.
Dinner by an Italian chef on a terrace facing the citadel, with no drive back.
What it leaves out
A beach or a position on the sea: the water is reached by boat or car.
The old town on the doorstep: the port is reached by the hotel shuttle.
Room for families of more than three outside the single suite category.
Who it suits
Book it for couples who want Bonifacio in view rather than underfoot, for three or four nights built around the pool, the spa and one day out to the Lavezzi. A family of four fits only in the suite, and anyone who wants to step out of the door into the alleys of the old town is better placed inside the walls.
Who should spend elsewhere
Casadelmar
Thirty-four rooms and suites on a hillside above the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio, all facing the sea and each with a terrace, a 25-metre pool by the water, two restaurants and a sea-access platform.
Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa
A family hotel on a sandy cove at Lecci, seven kilometres north of Porto-Vecchio, run by Hélène and Lise Canarelli: no outdoor pool, a heated indoor pool in the spa, and dinner at La Pinède under the pines.
